I was stupid, I admit it. I put DX8 on my machine. Now I need to get rid of it and move back to 7.1. Of course, MS won't let you do this.

Any ideas?

G'Day
If you are using win95 or win98/se you can try this file
http://www.tweakfiles.com/misc/directxuninstaller.html

It works most of the time,if you are running winME or 2k then this wont work and Im afraid a reinstall of the OS is the only real sure way.You could also try this as per M-Softs web page
============================
SUMMARY
This article describes how to reinstall Microsoft DirectX and replace all DirectX files.
MORE INFORMATION
To reinstall DirectX and replace all DirectX files:

Note the location of the Microsoft Windows Temp folder. To do this:
Click Start, and then click Run.

In the Open box, type temp, and
then click OK.

On the View menu, click Options or Folder
Options.

On the View tab, click to select the Display the full MS-DOS path in the title bar check
box, and then click OK.

Note the path to the Temp folder in the title bar.

Repeat this step to clear the Display the full
MS-DOS path in the title bar check box.

Minimize the Temp window.
Click the appropriate link for your version of Microsoft Windows on
the following Microsoft Web site:

http://www.microsoft.com/directx/homeuser/downloads/default.asp

Follow the instructions on the screen to download the DirectX 7.0
self-extracting file (Dx70eng.exe), and then save the file to the
desktop.
On the desktop, right-click the Dx70eng.exe file, and then
click Create Shortcut.
Right-click Shortcut To Dx70eng.exe, and then click
Properties.
In the Target box on the Shortcut tab, press
END, press the SPACEBAR, and then type the following line

/c /t:temp\directx

where temp is the path to the Temp folder you noted
in step 1. The text in the Target box should be similar to the
following line:
"C:\Windows\Desktop\Dx70eng.exe" /c /t:c:\windows\temp\directx

Click OK.
Double-click Shortcut To Dx70eng.exe to extract the
DirectX 7.0 files.
Click the Temp button on the taskbar.
Double-click the Directx folder, and then double-click
Dxsetup.exe.
Click Reinstall DirectX, and then follow the instructions
on the screen.

NOTE: When you are finished reinstalling DirectX, you can delete
the Directx folder in the Windows\Temp folder.

Hope this helps

THANK YOU!

Now you wouldn't happen to have a copy of the DX7.1 installer, would you?

Hello,

why you prefer DX7.1 and not DX8.0????
I have also DX8 on my PC. Does it have negative influence on SDOE?

Hi Maury,
I've had so many problem with DX and my "&$ù^àç" ATI video card that I've used that de-installer several times and I've kept a copy of all DX versions since DX5. (and every other time you end up in DOS mode killing all the part manually one by one )
I can mail you DX7 if you need, what's your e-mail ? (but it's more than 6Meg)
Good luck
Sailor

Actually it's not for SDoE but WWIIOnline. I find that I can ask tech questions here without getting flamed though.
