With more and more night missions being created I was just wondering what the status is with runway landing lights? ------------------ IP: Logged |

Hi K2, i was working at some runwaylights a while ago,but then i was busy with some terrain working so i didn´t touched it further. Now i´m busy again with terrain ideas for africa and rhineland and last the Ju52 where i´m back working on her. I know that Nat also create some runwaylights but i have no idea of the status. So maybe i can go on the lights in a few weeks.Rendsburger IP: Logged |

I have 1 airfield setup with basic runway lights, they are a simple set of green lights down the centre of the runway, they can only be seen from one side and not the other, this is to guide you down the runway in the right direction, but they do work well and are only visible within a few miles of the runway.I also saw what Ren had done using texture lightening on the runway, that looked good aswell but neither of us have had the time to realy dig into deciding the best way to do this, or adding it to more fields, it is a future project though. What about simply having white runway edge lighting spaced apart at intervals like real runway lighting is at small airports and like it most likely was back in the 40's.The concept of a single line of centerline lighting is nice and is used at large airports today--but I highly doubt it was used back then. It may simply be easier to do that though and beggars like me can't be choosy. AQ IP: Logged |

Hey AQ, this was something I asked about when I posted the pics of what I'd done, I was pretty much just testing how they would look, and I asked for any hard data on how runways were light up during the war, if we had good info on that it would be a starting point, without the right info we're just playing around IP: Logged |

Yes Nat-- I remember you asking that question--but I really haven't got a clue how the runways were lit back then. If I was a bettin man- I'd say they were lit just like today's small airports--but that's still just a guess.Like I said, beggars can't be choosy--and since I only play the game and don't add anything to it--I wouldn't complain about any way you fellas decided to do this--or if you even decided to. Just thought I'd throw in a suggestion and a post now that the board is back up. AQ IP: Logged |

Thx Rends & Nat.. I too have no real idea as to how they would have looked on WWII but Arty's idea of evenly spaced lights down each side like modern smaller airports is appealing to me. I do remember the pics of the ones you guys posted here ages ago and I did like them too. Anything to make it easier to see the runway and to stop me crash landing would be great If I find any pics of WWII runways lit up at night I'll try and post them here. Thx again you guys, we really appreciate your efforts.------------------ IP: Logged |

I read something in a book (Clostermann' I think, the part when they're based at Skaebrae?) about that the landing lights were put out around the airfield by the groundcrews by night and then they were collected again in the morning. If so, there still ought to be some kind of standard, propably around the convcrete runway. At least if this is true we can be sure that they weren't in the middle of the runways. When my dad was flying, he said he would buzz the neigbors when he needed to land and they would come out with cars and line the fields with headlights.------------------ MadMoe=FC= IP: Logged |

Wow Mad--those were the days--when neighbors were neighbors Nowadays-if you buzz the neighbors--they get their binoculars out--if you aren't really low--get your tail number and call the local authorities who then call every pilot's friend- the FAA. A few months later--after you've forgotten all about it--you get this official letter in the mail informing you that a violation is in progress against you that can result in revocation of your license and/or a nice fine. Or--where I live--they just take justice into their own hands and you land with an airframe full of bullet holes! Not that I would ever buzz anyone and not that I ever have-hehe My- how times have changed AQ
