Here is my idea for a new system to replace the current pack SNAFU that seems to be causing a lot of problems and confusion.

Note: I am not a programmer… I know enough that this is feasible and can be done somewhat easily.

First create a program that reads all the plane folders for a version # and checks the Par files for date.
Next the program connects to a server and gets the latest update file to compare to. (This would be a small text file with all planes or downloads)
All Files (planes, etc) out of date would be flagged.
All Files (planes, etc) not installed would be flagged.
The program would need GUI here to show you what is out of date and what is not installed.
The user checks off what he wants updated and or installed.
The program then downloads all need files. (simfiles? Or known sites in the update text file.)
The program installs what it has downloaded.

Anyone who has played a game like Everquest will know this is super-easy for a new user and very convenient.

This will give the user control of how much he wants to download at a time and how many addons he wants. We could even have the hi textures as optional check marks under each plane.

What do you all think?

Anyone this good at programming?

P.S. if this works maybe we can get the patch team to implement it into the patch itself. The addons would stay updated… and the patch would stay updated.

P.S.S.

If it is integrated into the patch:
Have the online portion me able to download addons needed for the mission in the online lobby.
This would force an online standard because you could only play if your version #'s were the same as the patch document retrieved from the patch server.

This used to be the kind of thing Spyder handled, but I don't know if he even lurks here anymore.

I'm feeling a little scorched right now, before I say too much about whether this is the way to go or not I need to step back and re-evaluate the whole situation, and what my future role, if any, will be in it.

SCROFT, this harks back to a post of mine before PP6 was put together.. and yes, I do have very strong opinions on the plane pack, but my opinion usualy gets voted out not that I'm complaining at all, this is a group thing

OK, your idea is almost exactly what I have posted before, and it get a rather cold response, I think mainly due to the problems of setting it up, in essence what your talking about is a similar thing to the way Microsoft Update works, their sites checks your current installation, and gives you download options to bring your setup up to date. To my way of thinking this system would be very good, but I don't think it would solve online mismatch problems etc, it would just make SDOE updates easier to get and install.

As you have noticed from my post, my way of thinking is quiet simply to simplify SDOEs online standard to what becaomes a Base Pack, you can have any amount of addons you want, but aslong as everyone has the base pack then online mismatches "should" only occure with none plane pack aircraft, we would have a fixed set of aircraft that never changes (bar additional nations aircraft as outlined in my post).

Now, if this type of pack could be incorporated into this online update system that would be best, at the same time you would also be able to select other none base pack aircraft etc to have installed.

OK, all this is well and good, but it still leaves us needing someone that would be able to build and maintain this type of update system, and I think we didn't have anyone for that the last time I brought this up, but hey, better to ask again and find no-one, than not to ask and there was someone, right?

I believe that this (or something like this) has been proposed in the past. Thing is, (like all the other discussions on this topic) nothing was ever done.
Two questions if I may SCROFT:
1) Who is responsible for providing the server?
2) Who is responsible for maintaining the data on the server?

Something like this would best be considered for the non-PP aircraft. Once it goes into the or one of the or whatever PP it comes off the list.

Something like that?

If someone could do the programing I could coordinate it all and would be willing to provide space on my web site for the update file. (it should be a small text file.. few K I would think) This file would have the asset name and version number or file date, file size, and a web address to download the file if needed. (simfiles... or where ever the file is)
I would be willing to QA this program and be willing to provide the upkeep of the update file. I figure it could be updated like every 2-4 weeks.

Some background...
I work for Activision in the Quality Assurance dept. and I am in the credits of SDOE
I know I haven't been in the forums much till recently but I really was quit busy for a while.
I know how to hack scripts just do not know how to write them. If someone can help by programming this I could easily keep it upto date.
What we need is a program that can:

GET from FTP (the update list)
Do a file compare
GUI for user selection of downloads
GET from FTP (files from sites in the update file and install the to the right folder)
GUI of completion of installed addons

All this is using simple internet calls for the most part. The GUI and the file compare not to sure. (I Think it would be easy)

Maybe Bryan could give some insite on the complexity of this sugestion.

Let me know what you all think
