Well, I have a tough one (at least I think so) for you guys !
With planepack 6.1 and the aircraft folder amost empty, how is it possible to use a custom skin ?
For example, I have a custom skin for the Hurmki that I want to use ! I created a Media\aircarft\Hurmki\textures folder and I put the custom skin in there. I loaded sdoe but no good ! The one from the par file loaded ! Any good ideas ? or what am I doing wrong ?
Thanks !

You have to make sure the name of the tif you made is correct. If you have BigMunger, use the 'listbig' tab and type in the location and par file number with the plane skins. Look for the Hurricane folder in the file list and look for the main tif for the Hurricane.

To save you from doing all this work, just call your skin "Hurrmki.tif"

And make sure the aircraft folder is called "Hurrmki" for the Hurricane.

Although some people say this is a myth, I have this happen occasionally when changing skins, and I have to delete the texture cache file for the new skin to show up.

There's a tutorial at Fighter Squadron Central that covers this. Go to the "Tips" section.

Well, probably I didnt explain this well !

In the pre-pp 6.1 era, I had no problem changing skins ! I did what you guys said !

But with pp61 ALL planes are in a par file !!! The aircraft folder is empty....Tried to make the corrct airplane folder and put teh skin with teh correct name in the but it didint work !

Only way to accomplish is is to open teh par file install the skin and then repack it...
But thats pain inthe as#^$&$$ !

See what I mean ?

eyes you spelt "aircraft" wrong.. maybe that was it!!!

did you ever backup your aircraft folder..

ie. for using the spoons loadouts online..

if you did.. then you have all the directories in there.. just remember to delete any files called loadout.ppf that you find
then use that folder

If you havn't then call back here.. it can be sent to you..

It would be a good idea. if the PP7.2 did create the relevant folder names for you.
or had them listed in the read me.

You found a annoying problem there.

EACH directory has a sounds and texture directory

List created with Dos DIR "directoryname" >tmp.txt

piping the output to file to cut and past.

If you use 'Ground Crew' you don't have to piss about swapping files manually. I have no idea where to get it from, I downloaded my copy about 2 years ago but it is the best SDOE ulitity in my opinion.

Eyes - as said above, if you kept a old Aircraft folder by renaming it, and it had the skin you want, just copy that plane folder into your new Aircraft folder. Go through it and make sure you delete any .sm or .ppf files that got carried over, and you should have your skin. It should work. Should, being the operative word, hehe.

All my schemes are set up for Ground Crew. All you have to do is drop the zips into the zip directory in Groud Crew. Run the ulitity and the texture files will be unpacked into the relevant directories (these directories will be created if they are not already present).

Hmmm...

Those of us who are hard-drive challenged (little room left) may find it difficult to BM all the different .par files just so's we can determine the correct folder names for all the myriad aircraft that are available in the PlanePacks.

Since I'm no programmer, I'm going to ask: How difficult would it be to create a snap-in routine for BigMunger that would build a flatfile detailing the folder/file structure in Media, without actually unpacking the files themselves?

Oh, and BTW, if anyone can supply the link to this "mythical" ;-) GroundCrew utility, please share it here!!! I've been looking for that guy for the longest time, keep hearing mention of it, but I can't get my grimy little hands on it!

WWDubya,

I'm not sure if this what you mean, but you can get BigMunger to create a txt file describing the contents of any PAR file you choose without unpacking the PAR file and taking up disk space. The text file details the file size, location (folder structure) inside media and also CRCs for each file (I think those are CRCs).

To do this, simply start BigMunger, switch to the 'listbig' tab, and type in the exact location and filename of the par file you'd like to see the contents of. Check the 'Dump To Text File" box and hit OK. The text file will be created inside \Media. All this without unpacking the PAR file at all and you can see what the files for skins and anything else are called, and where to put them inside \media.

Eyes...try this....

I sometimes get this problem when painting in gimp and replacing a skin.

1. Open the skin up in a paint prog (any that can handle .tiff files)

2. Save it to the correct location and file name.

3. DO NOT CLOSE THE .TIFF FILE !!!!

4. Go to the saved location in explorer, delete the file & hit F5.

5. Go back to the .tiff file in the paint prog and save again.

6. Go back to explorer and F5 (the .tiff file will now appear).

7. Close the paint prog (not realy required, but will save a bit of RAM during the game)

8. Start game. New skin should appear.

Granted this is a bit of a strange method - but it avoids deleting the cache files and therefor makes loading quicker.

Hope it helps bro

Cheers,

AGAS 5

Eyes,

I noticed there that you said "hurrmki.tiff". How about renaming the file to end with "tif" instead of "tiff"? Maybe SDOE doesn't read files with the extra "f" in tif? Just a thought...

Just a thought, are you doing just the Hurricane? If so, try changing the skin on another plane. Maybe, on the outside chance, your custom skin is the same as the 6.1 default skin and it is working but you don't see any difference. It still wouldn't hurt to try another plane.

Stupid me ! For a strange reason the file hurrmki.tif was seen by the wndows as hurrmki.tiff although in the properties of this file it was reckon as hurrmki.tif !
Anyway deleted it, redownloaded it and now it works great !

Thanks to all of you guys !
