Nations is badly understaffed in the sound department. Poor Commando is our only sound tech and we've got 5 countrys' worth of wavs to be processed, the first will be finished sometime next week. In the past, Lector and at least one other person have helped out, are they still around, but lurking? The process is relatively straight forward - 1. Delete any dead air from either end of each wav 2. Add radio clicks to each end of wav (I supply the click wav) 3. Make the wavs sound less crystal clear, more like wwii pilot radios (this is where we need gurus) 4. Where possible optimize for size, because wavs make up the bulk of the large Nations download size. There are other areas in the project where enthusiasm can make up for skill & experience, but I'm afraid this isn't one of them. If there is anyone out there who can help out, I would appreciate it if they could email me, I can't justify asking Commando to process over 300 wavs on his own. Thanks, Werner P.S. Email's available from my site or the forum summary under moderators. ------------------ Visit Abbeville Field Today! IP: Logged |

We've already had one inquiry, privately, and I'm actively seeking a second person (we needed a couple...) who, if he accepts, will be a real coup for the project. AGAS & other Nv3 team members - check your email for the juicy details. Werner ------------------ Abbeville Field: Dedicated to the SDOE Experience. IP: Logged |

Thanks Pye, I missed that. 63 wavs per nation, filesize varies but the aim is to keep it low. Quality work doesn't mean massive filesize, trust me on that I compiled some stats for the person who is recording the Canadian wavs tonight. The help wanted sign is being temporarily pulled from the window, I'm hoping it'll stay out but there may yet be a change. *fingers crossed* Da Jug will be happy, the two people involved are people not otherwise doing work for SDOE, to the best of my knowledge. Mr Molders Sir,I regret to say that I won't be able to help with the sounds. My WAV editor, by Creative Labs, doesn't have sufficient 'effects' for me to 'tin out' the wav as was the case with the finished sample you sent. My appologies for not responding sooner. IP: Logged |

On a completely different topic... after finishing the readme's (in the loadouts) for all of the German planes, I moved on to doing the squad files. I didn't get too far, but I would be willing to start up again if you want.Someone would have to provide the graphics though, all I do is the writing. Maury IP: Logged |

Anybody that would like to do this but is holding back because you don't have the software like ritt bear, let me know. There is sound editing/mixing software released under the GNU public lisence that has both Linux and Windows versions available. I have to go dig the links up, but this shouldn't be an issue for those that want to help. ------------------ "Da Jug" FM question: Which end does the propeller thingy go on? Ritt_Bear - I've still got you pencilled in, let me know what your status is once you talk with Da Jug about the software he mentionned.LilB - I'll email you the wav list when I get back home tonight. Maury - Knock yourself out man. I'm not too sure what you're planning on doing though - redoing current squads or helping out creating new ones? If its the latter, when you say all you do is the writing, would that include the research to provide the writeups? If I understand your intentions a little better I'll be able to respond in a more useful manner. Werner ------------------ Abbeville Field: Dedicated to the SDOE Experience. IP: Logged |

If you had Linux the umber of good and free utilities is mindboggling But for Windows here goes. Go to http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0,10151,0-1896426-106-0-1-0,00.html?tag=dir and then use the boxes at the bottom to limit the list to free software. Try one of these 3 free titles Audacity Crystal Audio Engine Quartz Studio Don't know much about these as the one I used to use is no longer available (spwave). Audacity got some good comments for it's Linux version though. P.S. if one of these is what you need, let me know and I'll see if I can get permission to include it on the Update CD. ------------------ "Da Jug" FM question: Which end does the propeller thingy go on? My extent of knowledge about digital sounds is asking people to record them, then forwarding them to the gurus and asking them to make them sound like wwii radios. Then I enjoy what they send back. Anyone else (Commando?) who knows their stuff in this area, if you could recommend a utility from the list above or elsewhere I think it would be a cool addition to have on that CD. Maybe more of us could get into sounds. Werner ------------------ Abbeville Field: Dedicated to the SDOE Experience. IP: Logged |

For proper sound editing I use Goldwave available from http://www.goldwave.com For adding one wav file to the front or rear of another I use the simple sound recorder which comes with Windoze, its quicker when doing a series of simple adds. IP: Logged |

2 thingsFirst, goldwave is a commercial program, what I was hoping for was feedback on the free programs so I could include the best one. Second- Werner, I have a son who's looking at going to college for sound and already runs the sound for a couple of places. I told him about this and mentioned how Meatwater got hired by a game company because of the sound work he did for EAW and SDOE. He's really interested, so I'm going to install the programs listed above and let him have a go at it. ------------------ "Da Jug" =V67= FM question: Which end does the propeller thingy go on? Da Jug - all five Nations 3 sound packs have processors assigned to them now, but I know lil'b is working on an alternate sound pack (like a skin to an aircraft) for Italy and will probably be in need of a processor, perhaps if you get in touch with him your son would have some "real world" material to work on.
