I don't know if this has ever been mentioned, so I thought I'd post it.

Back when I had a slower PC and got crappy FR's I found it helped to lower the DesiredDisplayRate in the SDOE.ini, basicaly so the game wasn't trying to display frames that my system simply couldn't handle, I droped the figure down to 10gps above what I was usualy getting, and it helped alot at the time.

OK, now I have a very fast machine, but am still using the Voodoo3, but the stock setting for DesiredDisplayRate was 70 if memory serves, well, now I've raised it to 100, with this settings my FR's are at best 97fps, and thats on a Voodoo3 with Duron 900 using D3D, the guys out there with similar CPU's but faster cards might find a great improvement in their top end FPS if they also raise this setting.

Like I said, I don't think this setting has been mentioned before, but with more people getting fast machines now, I figured it was worth posting about it

Hope it helps some of you, it did me

~Nat~

PS, I also set the MaxFrameRate to 100 aswell as I was unsure which of the 2 settings would give best results, so maybe you'll have to set both aswell, after getting better FPS I never did test for which of these actualy helped.

What's the advantage of 100 over 70? Even if it can do 100 isn't that still taking cpu power away from physics calculations, etc. which will slow down the frame rate in busy missions? My system can do 100 fps easy, but I keep the DisiredDisplayRate at 75.

PSI, at 400mhz I doubt it would help you, on my K62 550 I lowered the settings to around 30 each to stop SDOE working overtime when my machine couldn't handle it.

Jerry, the only advantage is it gives you higher frame rates on faster machines, the difference is fairly obvious though, if I set them to 70, then my max FR would be around 70, setting them to 100 means that I'm now maxing out at 97 (my cpu.g-card running at their max rather than the game), if there's so much going on in the mission, then that game speed/FR comes down from 97 to whatever level rather than comming down from 70. It's simply a way for fast machines to have higher frame rates

sorry PSI, just re-read your post, myself I used settings on 30 for the maxframerate and desiredsimrate max, thats when I had the 550mhz, I think it's worth you trying something like this if you don't usualy get above 30fps, what I "think" happens is that if a higher setting is used, then SDOE tries it's hardest to produce that, meaning your machine might only be able to give out 30fps Max, but the game is trying to display 70fps, meaning your bottlenecking, setting mine lower on the 550 made the game much more stable, less prone to lag effects, I believe this is because the game is only trying to output to around my machines maximum performance, so reducing that bottleneck.

Hope this helps in some way;

Thanks Nat,
I'll goof with it and see if I can get any improvement. I remember way back when and the original discussion about this but I didn't ever get around to messing with it. I was looking at it the other day and the light bulb went off but I didn't know what to set it at, thanks. Also I really am probably pretty lucky when it comes to FR's, I get about 40 to 70 in the .9 patch on this little 400. Except when I use more than about 8 planes and bombers have always caused lower FR's for us all. One thing I din't really understand about the patch is that right after I installed .9 and .8 when I first start using them I got about 10 to 20 FR's max. As I use tha patch the FR's improve, this happened in both .8 and in .9 but none of the other patches. My guess is that it has something to do wdith the texture cashe...

hey nat
as i understand from other games like q3 or hl there is this kind of command (maxfps) and it's primarly used for online .. for exmaple in q2 online is very good to set maxfps to 32..why? because u don't need more fps online and it helps lower the ping and also reduces lag..of course u can set this higher but it's useless..it just uses bandwidth
but it's different in single player where u acually want to get as much out of ur comp as u can get..so this maxfps is something similar to vsync (here is the refresh rate of ur monitor limit for fps, let say u have 60hz refresh rate at some resolution u won't get more then 60fps in game) it's recommended to turn vsync off..and also to set maxfps as high as u can..it only limits how many frames will be drawn per second (i set the limit in q3 to 160 and actually in some rare ocassians there was 160, but timedemo sohwed 90)..but i don't get the idea of minfps..how can u persuade ur comp to get minfps rate if it's unable to produce desired minfps..
just some of mine ideas..

Excellent bmr I'm real glad that this has helped, since your the only person to have posted that they have changed these settings it's realy good to her you got good results

Can you post some specifics, what your system is and what you changed the settings to? Might help others.

Thanks bmr, glad I wasn't talking crap LOL

Schaf, the idea behind minFPS as I see it is that the game will take all possible steps to maintain atleast that setting, possibly (and I have no idea, just thoughts) like sounds being dropped to reduce CPU overload, textures being cut back.. things like that maybe, but I don't honestly know and it's not something I would change in the ini.

Nat-I have a brand new system-amd1333 266fsb-256mbddr ram {the wife hates it~!}.I was averaging between 55 and a max of 70 fpswith the default setting. After following your suggestions I have maxed out at over 200fps.My average is about 110 and only drop to 80s with alot of action. I set desired display rate at 250 and have experimented with various settings. I don't see any downside so far. I have tried this with the 2.9 beta patch in open gl and the old Michael Harrison beta patch in D3D both with excellent results. Again thanks for an excellent suggestion.
