Very nice Snickers, btw is that colour accurate? I just think it looks a little bright/gaudy for a warplane.

Also another question seeing as a lot of ppl will be looking in here. How do you make the objects in anim8or into sm files for use in Opoenplane? ie how do you make the exported anim8or files into sm's??

Thanks

Snake

RE: The blue... Actually yes, it is fairly close to what the early planes were. Others were straight silver, others black (the famous "Black Cats" which by the way was more than one squadron).

RE: Anim8or... I he never used it so I cant say exactly about it... AC3D seems to be the modeling software of choice (even I sprang for it... )

This is not a short topic and there are many others who I will trust to answer any questions you have. (I know because I rely on their skills myself... ) If no one responds, or if you still have questions email me...

Hey Snickers, check the HStabs... They appear to have a slight shading problem on one side. Other than that, she really looks great! Hope someone gives her a real good 512 skin tho...

Razer has promised to take care of the shading prob once WTG fixes the nose... But thanks for noticing.
BTW - DM is from (and still being worked on by) Raider
Casualty has promised to do a 1024X1024 skin for her, once she is retextured... Hopefully we will have a domino effect _very_ soon...

Snickers, check out page 52 of the May issue of FlyPast magazine. You can buy a 1943 PBY-5A Catalina...immaculate condition, flight capable, new zero time engines. Only $650,000 US.

Now, if every member put in $600.....

I'm amazed the price is so low!! For a classic piece of WWII heritage like that, and flyable no less, I would have figured at least 2Mil.. Oh well, still out of our reach.

As for Anim8or... I'm interested in the answer to that question too. What does Gustavo use for his stuff, I mean he's made aircraft with something unconventional and even scratch built that new nachtjager messerschmitt.

Regarding Anim8or, yes it can be done. But you have to remember that an .sm file is more than just a file with a 3d model in it. It contains OpenPlane data too. I usually base my new objects on existing ones. I don't think you can scratch build sm files in OpenPlane Studio anyway. If you'd like to get a model from Anim8or into an sm file, model the part in Anim8or and export it as .obj format. Start OPS, open an existing plane or ground object, select a part (a part that relates to the one you are importing to replace it), and import it as .obj format. You will find that sometimes the objs exported from Anim8or aren't imported into OPS properly (ie, it just won't import)...this is because OPS obj import was designed for 3DS Max objs. But this is an easy fix. Get 3D Exploration (it's free), open the Anim8or objs in that, and save them as obj again. OPS can now import them. Also remember before exporting out of Anim8or, select all objects, hit "Build" "Convert to Mesh", then click "Join Solids" so the part is as one object otherwise it won't import into OPS.

I'm not sure about what Gustavo uses, but Anim8or was used to build the Ju52 (by Rendsburger), so it is definately a capable program, but maybe not as advanced as AC3D or 3DS.

Man I should really finish that tutorial.

Thanks Harman. I thoguht that you had to export it as a lod and then recreate the sm file and then load it in OPS.
I probably will get AC3D but first I want to know that I can go through the process of making a plane.

Thanks all....

BTW - The Mig 15(?) built by Gecko of the =FC= was scratch built, and does not contain parts from other planes. Thats the only one I know of, but there could be others...

The PBY was based on the Lanc (the the FMs are no longer anything the same). Per pilot report, our PBY flies about the same as the real thing. i.e. what ever direction you are heading is the wrong one....

I tried what you said Harman but got stuck.
quote:

Could you explain tha whole sentence again?
I don't understand that. What I tried was makeing an object in anim8or, exporting it as an obj. Then I loaded up OPS and tried to import it but a window pops up saying Select Objects on the top. But there are no objects to select...

Lol Snake, I came back in here sooner or later tho

Ahh, you're probably better off posting a new topic in the Tech Talk forum and I'll follow you there...

But to answer your question here quickly, yep the reason you are not able to see objects in the OPS Import window, is because the obj you made isn't accepted by OPS. This is because the obj import in OPS is optimized for 3DS Max, not Anim8or. As I said above, to fix this, just open your obj you exported out of Anim8or in 3D Exploration, and resave it as .obj again. Now try importing it again in OPS, and it should work. Simple.

Also remember that before you try to import a new object you made, you have to first select an existing part on the sm file in OPS to replace your obj with. Also remember to "Join Solids" in Anim8or before exporting otherwise when you try to import in OPS, you'll get multiple objects listed in the Import window, and you can only import ONE.

Yes, i remember the promise I made. Dust off your CD cause I will send you (and only you) the one and only ALPHA copy. The shadow is wrong, and there is much left ot be done. But the AI can fly the plane, take off and land (usually ) The rest is coming along well and we should see the full beta soon!!! (Why else do you think I put up the pics??)

shading problems.....er....they were fixed on the last model I did, when I re-shaped the nose.

There were some dodgy verts in there, which was an easy fix / re-shade.

I am hunting down the last model I did, and I will get this over to you as soon as I track it down!!!!! hink it's on the work machine.
