http://26ac.org/on/onliners.shtml it's the "Pappy" scheme Cas did for the F4U. You'll need tochange the plane SM to use the 512 texture since jedi hasn't don't it yet. IP: Logged |

yes, but like i said above, you can't enjoy it without fixing the plane SM. (plus your video card must support 512 as well) IP: Logged |

As soon as Jedi gives it 512 or 1024 textures in the sm file, I'll try to make a nicer one in 1024. I'll replace those vertical panel lines on fuse with rivets as it should be, redo all the other rivets smaller to be more convincing, and clean up more of my mistakes. I did that without expecting to really get large texture support, but now I'm happy! IP: Logged |

How much work is it for you plane builders to change the .sm files so these birds will take 512X512 or higher textures? Do you need to be an OP expert? Is it something a moron like me could help with if there were step-by-step instructions on how to open or create the .sm files?I get the sense that you skin painters are getting woodies just thinking about the possibilities and anything we can do to adapt our planes for hi-res skins should be done ASAP. We may even get DanW interested again with a new Ultimate series. Just think what Dan, Yardstick, Razer, Casualty and others could do with this! IP: Logged |

Wow...that looks great, but, er...what is it exactly that I need to do to make it work that way? I thought all I had to do was change the options in the video setup or the demons.ini file???But of course that didn't work, so obviously I need to do something else ------------------ --jedi-- IP: Logged |

It takes about 5 sec to change a plane over to use 512 textures. Open it in OPS. click on the textures you want to have 512 and check the size in the boxes. So it makes the changes Bryan says you have to click in the 3D window then save. That's it! The F4U above has been changed on my end to see the changes. I've changed all the planes I fly with offline but I'm no longer online compatible. We may need to issue a planepack patch to update all the planes to use 512 even if they don't so people can make new textures. this wont hurt anyone that can't use them just help the ones who can. Whoa...I didn't even think about online compatibility. We better think about this. When these new skins start appearing (they have and they will) everyone is going to want them, they are so awesome. If some of us start changing our own .sm files it could cause a mess. Worse than 6.0 vs. 6.1 and patch/non-patch. Your idea of a PlanePak patch sounds like the best solution. The sooner the better. I hope someone who knows OP has some spare time. Doing it for 6.1 would be good timing.IP: Logged |

Let's keep in mind too that there are a number of us with older systems that don't support the 512's.....if you are making planepacks with different textures and such in the sm's-- you will nullify all the progress we are trying to make....and many of us will no longer be able to fly online.....if I am getting this straight that is If this has no effect on the online game-- then forget what I said above! ------------------ Brought to you by the campaign for a better Dauntless! OK, got it workin Unfortunately my website appears to be down at the moment so I can't post the pics I took, but trust me, Cas's skin looks REALLY good in 512 res. I set the F4U-1A to 1024-capable, so if someone wants to go whole hawg, so to speak, it will work.As for online compatibility, Razer has it right. Since the .sm file is changed, and it's not a "sub model" you're changing, the plane will mismatch online. So ALL the planes in PP6.X will have to get modified, and a new planepack will have to be released, if you want this capability across-the-board (and of course it only works with patch.9) Pity about the timing, but there it is. BUT, as long as all the plane-makers agree that the "standard" for a plane release is to set the texture CAPABILITY to 512 or 1024 but to provide an ACTUAL texture of only 256x256, this should all be transparent to the guys with older systems. The texture size in the .sm file only specifies the maximum size allowable, not the actual size of the texture in use. If you set it to 512 and only provide a 256 skin, 256 is all you'll see. For the planemakers, resampling a 512 skin down to 256 is a one-step process in the art program, so it should be no problem to always create a 256 skin to go with the gee-whiz 512 or 1024 skin. Include the 256 in the zipfile and make the bigger skin an optional download, and everyone's happy, right?

Jedi, if you could send me the .sm file, I'll jump on a 1024 version of the Pappy scheme as soon as I finish one for 51B and 51D. Raider sent me a 1024 sm for the 51 and I think something really nice may come from it. Much better can be done than the 512 I made, cause I wasn't expecting big texture support at the time. All the rivets can go on it at that size and still look nice even if you limit it in options to 512.IP: Logged |

Got my ftp workin again... If you have the beta2 version of the F4U-1A, from http://www.simfiles.com you should be able to modify it yourself in OPS. Just open the plane, select the texture tab, double-click on the f4u11.tif and f4u12.tif textures, and change the size to 1024x1024 or 512x512 and save (DON'T save "referenced files" or you'll mess up the pilot--I warned ya...) If you don't have the beta F4U-1A, well, get it. Or you'll have to wait a little longer--there are still some...er..."issues" with the new patch that I'm having trouble fixing... Oh yeah, I guess you'd ALSO need the actual 512x512 skins... Cas, did you post those anywhere, or are Razer and I the only ones who have em? ------------------ --jedi-- [This message has been edited by jedi (edited 06-09-2001).] IP: Logged |

Why is it that anything 3dfx less than Voodoo3 (maybe even including V3) can't run 512s? I read that in another thread, one of the many on the subject... Those skins are looking so sweet, its hard knowing you probably can't run them, I was going to load up my 109s with 512s as they came out. Werner ------------------ Visit Abbeville Field Today! Thanks guys! Here's a drab one I need to scar up a bit more, but I'm proud of how clear the emblem displays. Thanks to Yardstick for directing me to a site to find these. I'm going to do "Iron Ass" for the 51d and a Lou again how it should be--this is fun. Then I'll try a a 1024 Pappy skin. IP: Logged |
