The most current version of DirectX is 8a. If you loaded only version 8 then you may want to try the corrected version. I'm using 7a so I don't know if 8a works for SDOE. I would assume it would though.

read somewhere that the 8a is a MS beta and they were making some sites to take it off. It might be time limited, although working well.

No 8.0a is an official release. if you have 98 or ME and use the windows update feature, 8.0a is listed as one of the "Highly recommended" updates.

MS is probably making sites remove it cuz it makes it easier for people with pirated versions of windows to update their software.

yes, 8a fixes a lot of problems people were having with games and 8.

I think SDOE was one of the games on the list.

Warning! DirectX8a intall tired it's best to trash windows!

I downloaded and installed DirectX8a and then was prompted to reboot. I did and it stuck at the windows display screen for about 10 minutes. I hit Esc to see behind the display screen and it was writing over and over " unable to upgrade 1% to 2%". It did that for ever so after much time we got into the registary (windows was unaccessable in reg and safe mode). After removing some directx stuff from the reg we got into windows again and are rebuiling some lost items.

Good luck!
