Been a great while since i played SDOE (both online and offline). Used to play it online long time ago with some of my 214th squad mates together with guys like Jetlag, Birds, Pye, Bakunin and some guys of the SBM but then, we only had a limited choice of planes. Was still fun tho, despite the online damage bug thing. Dunno if that has been fixed since then? BTW is it still being played online?

Anyway, in anticipation of IL-2, was eager to try out the I16, so i just recently downloaded the latest planepack/patches and all, reinstalled SDOE. I must say it is amazing to see howfar this sim has come with all the work of the talented modelers. Great artwork/cockpits/camo's and a plethora of planes to try out.

Question: when i tried out the P47D to my surprise, i felt it rolled a bit slow, is it my stick or did it indeed roll that slow? It has a fantastic cockpit tho

All in all jolly good show people! And maybe see some of you in the Russian virtual skies in November -> IL-2

Why wait- we have our own Russian skies now. The Smolensk Terrain is complete, and Stalingrad is being worked on. Go here to take a look at Stalingrad.

Also, Nat just released a Mig-3 which isn't in the plane pack yet.

Zurawski should probably answer this since he did the flight model, but... yes, it did have a fairly slow roll rate. To improve this, Republic eventually switched to a clipped wing design when they ushered in the N series... would be cool if someone would build that one!

Hell... I'm now convinced Da'Jug Waxer know more about the P-47s FM than I do!

Any case a lot of variable go into the FM of the P-47. exspecially the roll...

1.) Altitude. The P-47 will roll differently at different altittudes due to the air viscocity.

2.) Speed. This also effects the roll rate.

3.) Fuel load. Granted the fuel tank is centrally located but the slight shift in CofG deas effect the roll.

4.) Last but the most important... "rudder input". If you perform a locked roll (no rudder input) the 47 takes between 7 to 13 seconds to rool depending on speed and alt. If you use the rudder to cooridnate the roll (like a snap roll but not as severe) you can reduce the roll time to as little as 5 to 6 sec.

... Note though, that with a full fuel load you may very well throw yourself into a spin if you do this ubruptly and hald the roll to long...

I thought the P-47 rolled too slow at first too because of reading all of the stories about how it rolled so well.

Zur has the rate correct as far as I can tell. What made the P-47 seem so good at rolling was the amount of "displacement" you can get from your initial line of travel. Combined with a nose up or nose down attitude, you can accomplish the same stuff at time with a roll better than you can with a turn. It takes some playing with, but once you start to get the hang of it you'll find some really cool maneuvers you can pull.

As for someone metioning 8 .50's not being very effective (in another post)- get a little closer

I typically try to close to less than 150 yds if at all possible. You can literally shred an aircraft at that distance with the P-47.

I have been working with her (flying) lately.... Can someone out there (tail?) come up with a real prop for her? I can fly the bombing and ground support missions, but I cant dogfight her....

Oh yeah, last night I crashed (suprise ) the P-47 exploded and the system locked up in the middle of the explosions.... Are there any known issues out there?
