Right now I have a mac and I was going to build myself a PC for just gaming and leave everything else to my mac. I think I everything researched out and stuff so I think there wont be any problems but I just wanted to make sure there isnt any blaring problems with the list of parts I have, I just decided to ask here since I have been waiting years to play FS. Anyways is there any problems with this setup (missing major pieces and incombatabilities)

1.2Ghz AMD Thunderbird
AD11 FIC motherboard
256mb DDR2100
Visiontek GeForce 3
75gb ATA/100
16x DVD-ROM
case and 300w power supply
Soundblaster Platinum
Mouse, keyboard, nic,
I think this setup will run FS just fine....
-Khadgar

I cant wait till I can get off this 6 year old mac that get like 20 fps in all my games.

Incomaptibilities-

it's incompatible with the green color I turn from envy

The G-Force 3 is an unknown, but the rest should be fine

Sounds like it oughta do it; as is said, the unknown is the GF3. The MB and Soundblaster Platinum may be a potential prob...maybe not, too. Make sure you know all the sites where all possible driver combinations are buried! Especially the video card; the only thing I have run across - and that has been seldom - is drivers for Visiontek. Stick with the Nvidia ones, for safety.

But this should handle SDOE just fine - the question may be, will SDOE handle it?

Neal reminded me about something- don't buy a motherboard with in board sound (if the FIC has it pick another model or an A-bit)

Do NOT buy a motherboard with the Ali Magik chipset- they have been raked over the coals for stability problems.

Video card- to avoid driver issues, buy a card made by one of the following companies (listed in order of driver development that usually rates highest):
Guillemont/Hercules
Leadtek
Creative
ASUS

Jug,

If you have a motherboard with onboard sound, if you jumper it out and replace it with a Soundblaster Live Platinum, will there still be incompatibilities?

About 80% of the motherboards with on board sound will defeat the onboard sound ok. The one's that don't will drive you to drink.

Check with a local computer store and ask if they've had any problems upgrading to the sound card you want to use with the same motherboard model.
-------------------------------------------
As an aside- NEVER, under any circumstances, if you are building a new system for anything other than solitaire or internet browsing, buy a board with onboard video (Never ... never ... never). You can peruse past postings in this section and find out why. Besides- MB's with onboard video share the ram for video memory which slows the chipset down by as much as 50%.

Kahd,
I will strongly echo every other post that has been made. Look into a motherboard with nothing but the IO ports (serial/Parallel/USB) built in, and NOTHING else. Good Motherboard companies would be Asus, Abit and Tyon. Beyond that, you are taking a chance with something that could be very flaky. The rest looks good. Always remember to be sure to setup the system with the latest drivers and heed warnings and suggestions by the manufacturers.
Enjoy the system.

I use the same setup.
Go to nivida.com and download the lastest drivers. windows 98b will do this for you.
Just say update drivers. Also find ms joystick works fine. Your frame rate will be
in the 70's fps.

Ok ok...Now I just have to get this think ordered...Ive read some reviews of the Motherboard im getting all of them seem to be good.....I've read some reviews of FighterSquadron and one of the things ive heard most people dislike is how close the fog is, can it be adjusted or would doing so kill the framerates? oh and btw where do I buy that CD that is full of the all the awsome stuff that the FS community has built?

Go here for info on the Add-on CD. http://www.fightersquadron.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/004036.html

As you can see there may be a new one shortly since 6.1 is out (at least in Beta form). It's well worth the cost - which is minimal.

Regarding the fog: it can be adjusted as close-in or as far-out as you want, depends on taste and cpu/video card power. My system is close to yours so power won't be an issue.

ok ok.... Now what about a joystick? Right now i have my Thrustmaster FCS for my mac and i LOVE IT. btw they have it for pc but i dont remember its the one that is same design as in most jets. Anyways i love it but i was thinking of a few things.
First off is Force feedback cool and worth it? and i was looking at the cyborg 3d because it has a rudder and thrust right on the stick and i thought that was pretty neat. What are the best stick on the market for rightys?

I have a Microsoft Precision Pro and I really like it. Very reliable, good control, never had any problems with it.

As for force feedback, have a read of this.

SDOEs force feedback support really sucks IMO.. But if youve got enough money to buy that system, get two joysticks! One force feedback and one not.

I have the first FF Logitechm, the BIG ONE. It has the option to tone down the effects. FWIW, I really like the stick; solid platform, strong and well fitted grip, and software adjusted center "spring."

Truth be told, however, I have the effects tuned so that I receive minimal inputs. In RB3D, it helps alot to have some kind of notification that a stall is imminent. In SDOE it isn't quite as useful. It is nice to be able to adjust the center spring; saves on the fatigue factor, yet G-forces can still be felt.

Don't you want to buy any speakers!

My Cambridge 4 way suround sound with bass kick ass subwoofer is great,,,
but the best thing about it is, it as a volume control turn dial that is on a tough extended lead and can be placed right next to the keyboard! because the amount of times you need to lower and raise volume levels ,, in different games, during games when the phone rings or the neighbours complain or the missus can't hear the tv is quite alot

Any money left over ,, send it here!

Soltek Inc motherboards they use the VIA chipsets and they are very good performers
buss speed 266 also with there lates

Mine KX133 has Sound on board and game port, that can be disabled bios with no problems,, it's nice to know I have a backup built in!

tho I prefer using the soundblaster live!

Yeah'll I'll be getting speakers, but only after a few weeks, the price keeps going up it seems.....
Right now I am stuck between the Cambridge Soundworks 5.1 and the Klipsch ProMedia 4.1. Also i think I am going to get the X86, and btw what are some other good flight sims on the market?

Ok, well I've made a few changes to my setup now I'm going to have a 1.33ghz Thunderbird, and double the ram. I was thinking of changing the motherboard, what would be one optimal for all this power.
and I heard that some ram doesnt work with AMD cpus. I was going to get Crucial, does all crucial work with AMD or just some?
