Well, I'm not too sure about 8 bit tifs, etc, but I managed to pull this from the readme of BigMunger:"Convert non-alpha tiff files to 8bit. This option will convert any tiff files going into the parfile, to an 8 bit format. This can greatly decrease the final size of the parfile." I'm not sure about quality though. I hope I haven't given you any info you already knew... ------------------ Visit FS:SDOE Online [This message has been edited by Harman_5 (edited 05-23-2001).] IP: Logged |

Spin, maybe you could answer this. What options do you use when you compile a par file?IP: Logged |

don't check this when your building. It lowers the quality of all the tifs and gives you crappy paint schemesIP: Logged |

I use the tif compression for the planepack.Razer, I hear you on the "lowers quality" but with the already bulky size of the planepack I have been using the compression component of the parfile builder. This has significantly reduced the size of the planepack parfiles. Please remember that I'm trying to prepare something that produces online compatibility and not necessarily great graphics. If people want to enhance the graphics, they can add improved/alternate skins that aren't compressed and may look better without affecting online compatibility That said, I've never looked at the difference after two files (one with and one without compression) are zipped. I'll have a look at this later and summarize the variance as it would affect download size. It may be possible to create two versions of the planepack: one with and one without compression. I'll look into this. I would need to arrange another site to host it though. ------------------ Spin Visit Spin's Planepack Site to learn more about planepack V6.0 and ongoing development of the planepack IP: Logged |

Converting your tif to 8 bit will make the tif alot smaller and 256 colors with loss of quality. Normally we use 24 bit (16.7M colors) tifs.Compression of tifs should be done as standard, it doesn't affect the quality. Elric IP: Logged |

Ive decided for the final release I want to decrese the pack size. I have done this successfully with little or no graphic degration side-affects. (I really only noticed it on the loading screen. Everything else just seems a tad less blurry) The size went from 43.4 to 28.8 megs with one click of a button! Im now going to use the 'Use ZLib compression' option aswell as the 'Convert non-alpha Tif files to 8bit' option. The later option GREATLY reduced the pack size with VERY little degrade in Tif quality.Thoughts? IP: Logged |
