... Da jug Waxer,
Just a informational FYI for you and those that haven't been around to see me pontificate on this subject...
"Calibrating your joystick for FSSDOE"
1.) Pick a plane that for you personnaly is the most twitchiest the air. (if you calibrate to the twitchiest the rest of them will just fall into rank)
2.) drop into a mission where you start on the runway... go external and park your ass behind the aircraft.
3.) Move the control surfaces to their fullest extent and pay particular attention to the range of movement compared to that of your joystick.
In a nutshell what you want is for your joysticks inputs to be a 1-to-1 ratio to your control surfaces as possible.
As an example... if you deflect you ailerons to a right-hand turn, your joystick and the ailerons should reach their limits at near the same time. If your ailerons stop moving before your joystick reaches its limits, your joystick is going to be too sensitive to inputs.
As a rule of thumb... the longer / larger your joystick throw (or range of movement)... the smoother and more precise your control of the aircrafts will be.
This is where joysticks like the Microsoft joysticks have problems.... They generally have short ranges of movement. Thus they effectively reduce potential smooth, precise input because they have a much shorter throw
(When I say throw , I mean like the range from center to their right or left or up or down limits BTW)
ALSO... if the deadband is set to large it also makes the joystick more sensitive!
Example... joystick normally has a 3 inch throw right or left... you give it a 1 inch deadband, your joystick now has to translate the input of 3 inchest within the confines of 2 inches! Can you say "twitchy"?
Over view:
1.) Joystick to control surfaces as near 1-to-1 as possible.
2.) Smallest deadband as possible.
The reason I bring this up is I know your working on FMs and are interested in calibrating the FMs to accomidate the majority of joysticks. Fact is ... if everyone calibrated their joysticks to this measure, all FMs would present themselves as they were meant to be... (I used this calibration for all my FMs)
Oh and from experiance... 50% of the time the joystick sensitivity needs to actually be hand-edited in the demons.ini because the ingame sliders do not allow enough adjustment.
Hope this helps everyone!
