On July 12, 2 PBYs were escorting a small convoy. One PBY close to the water to look for subs, the other to look for Condors (the had attacked the day before...
The Condor was nearly twice as fast as the PBY and more heavily armed....
This is the report from the co-pilot, Lietenamt (j.g.) E. Bourgeault:"The Heine leveled off to make his run and we set a collision course for him. Both planes were shooting, and he had a cannon in addition to machine guns. At the last minute he turned off to keep from getting rammed. He kept climbing and leveling off to get a pass at the ship, but we kept on climbing with him, always inside, and would get in the way every time he made his run. THen we would chase him away. Imagine a PBY chasinf a Focke Wulf. Once we lost him in the clouds and he got in for one drop on the convoy. It was good bombing, for he got a hit, but he didn't try again..."
"...Then another Fw appeared and attacked the convoy. We applied the same tactices as before and haad climbed to nearly 13,000 feet when the Nazi started a really determined run. We got square in his way. The airplanes were shooting at pretty close range and the fire from the Fw was whipping through our plane. Lieutenant Lee Kennedy, our navigator, had a narrow escape. The nose gunner, Carl Adams, got in some good bursts. He said he was working his guns up and down like a pump handle. The Fw started trailing smoke and turned tail and headed for home."
Wow what a report! It should be noted that every crew mwmber of the PBY was awarded the DFC...
The text of this report is uncensored as to references to native origin.... My apologies to anyone who may be offended, but I felt it best to give the report with editing it (except what went on between the two attacks...)
