i've long since thrown my away but it did have a B-17 on the cover. I'm thinking europe had a cover and the US had a cover. Maybe aussies had another one too but i'm not sure.IP: Logged |

I had the B-17 too (box long gone). On the web, I've seen a different version with a photo of a real B-24 exploding (as opposed to the B-17 which was from the game). Given that I'm in the design/publications business, my guess would be that the B-24 cover was a pre release version which never saw the light of day when someone realized that there was no B-24 in the game!It would seem that those that put the manual and box together had little contact with those actually creating the sim. As a designer and an amateur historian, such things have always irked me bad, ever since the days when the board game 'War At Sea' had a painting of the USS Texas on the cover, a ship with a tiny role in the game. A good portion of the photos in my U.S. manual feature aircraft not in the original game! The line art of the Ju88 is the wrong model altogether, and the historical text leaves a lot to be desired in some places (siting RAF expansion of their heavies as due to the success of the B-17? What?). For what it's worth, I chose it from the glut of WW2 sims coming out at the time since it let my fly a Lancaster (not to mention the other bombers, which were mostly lacking in the other fighter-centric offerings). I'll get off my soap box now . . . ------------------ Be seeing you, 3dp Visit RAF Harkness! IP: Logged |

Us Aussies got the same cover that Aladar is talking about.Rendsburger: I tried to scan the box picture in to send it to you, but for some reason, it comes out in really crappy quality. Don't know about the rest of you, but i got a free CD: Great Combat Aircraft #4 B-17.
It's just the video series on CD, but it is VERY good. If anyone knows where i might find the rest of the series on CD, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I still have my US box. It's the same as Harman's but without the "bonus CD" circle and the lower right rating language is the US version. Art work is exactly the same.[This message has been edited by Jerry (edited 04-15-2001).] IP: Logged |

Yep Harman, thats the one I had, except no bonus CD. I got mine the day it came out. I had the game reserved and waited for it for a year. I remember the call that said it was in like it was yesterday.IP: Logged |

OK....I don't have my box, but I do have some pics of some pre-release screenshots. Man I wish I could've played with this game before it lost all this...Pete Hawk, jedi? I see your names in the manual under "Visioneers"...did the game you tested have this?:Look at the lighthouse in the first pic....does it look like it has a working light? And is that a castle in the background? Speaking of which-- the bottom pic- the ruins look different ------------------ Brought to you by the campaign for a better Dauntless! Yep I hope the box text is readable, I couldn't scan too high a res, giant file size then. Notice the far lower right box screenshot features a dogfight between two Typhoons. Oops! ------------------ Visit FS:SDOE Online

Lil B', it's actually quite good. It shows real footage of B17s bombing from low altitudes, islands in the Pacific, and some cockpit footage from the B24s and '17s too. There's some footage of the temporary airfields the U.S made in "Kiska" in the Aleutians (sp?) to fight the Japanese, and some of the planes (a P38) going through some huge water puddles! There's also some footage of a not-so-lucky pilot trying to land on a water-drenched runway and skidding off on his belly Low altitude bomb runs by the '17s and '24s are cool! The bomb fuses are set to delay, so the bombers can escape the blast of the bombs. There's also some footage of the B17 being built and shown off with some footage of the early '17s sent to England, etc, and also some of the newer bombers like the B52 are shown and the intro of the CD is that famous gun camera footage of a German fighter shooting at the '17s engines and the ball turret gunner is dead you can tell because the ball is static, pointing downwards. I was gonna take some screens of the footage, but the stuff is copyrighted. Oh yes, at the end of the Cd, it says: "You've seen the aircraft...Now fly them...If you can!", and then it plays some cool in-game footage of SDOE. The tracers are red and the explosions imo look better. It shows a p38 bombing and rocketing some towns and oil refineries and also some dogfights. Oops, I've ranted again... ------------------ Visit FS:SDOE Online [This message has been edited by Harman_5 (edited 04-16-2001).] IP: Logged |
