This is the BBC news. A Lancaster was shot down after a successful Pathfinder mission over enemy territory yesterday. The bomber ran into an enemy night-fighter and tangled with it for several hours, the gunners in the Lancaster inflicting heavy damage to the German aircraft, but not before the enemy had crippled two of the Lancaster's engines. It managed to stay airborne until dawn, when there was enough light for the pilot to find a suitable field in which to make an emergency landing. All seven crew members are safe, and will most probably be picked up from France tomorrow. Here is a photograph taken by an RAF night fighter on an intruder mission, which ran into the bomber and saw it safely down: Whaddya think of that pic?? I'm experimenting with different sky colours, but it's difficult to get them just right. ------------------ Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth and danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings. Sunwards I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there. I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung my eager craft through footless halls of air. ...free provider strikes again. The usual tricks to see the picture didn't work, either (going to the site first to pick up the cookie, then trying the image link)Werner ------------------ Visit Abbeville Field Today! IP: Logged |

If you can't see the pic, just past this address line in your address box or even easier, just click on the line itself. It should work as a link to the pic. http://www.geocities.com/semmern/Bomber_down.jpg ------------------ Condor out [This message has been edited by Condor (edited 04-06-2001).] [This message has been edited by Condor (edited 04-06-2001).] IP: Logged |
