Why a GeeBee you ask?

I made the GeeBee because I love golden age airplnes and in particular, air racers. I also wanted to test the response to a civilian aircraft. The GeeBee is a very flashy and exciting civil airplane, unlike a cub or cessna, and if I was going to fish I wanted good bait and if I wanted to put one of the first civil aircraft in SDOE than what better than a colorful, fun one.

Open plane is much better than most realise. The flying of virtual planes in open plane mimicks more exactly the feeling of being in a real aircraft. This is the media for virtual flying to date (period).

This point was made again last night when I took a beautifully rendered GeeBee made by a comercial artist for FS2000 up for a flight. I was, of course, disappointed. The plane was drop dead gorgeous in it's 512 textures and perfect modeling but glided along the ground like a ghost, rotating much to quickly and with no feeling of leaving the ground. No feeling! In open plane we have the feeling of being on the ground!

Ok so what is this all about, this GeeBee in a war sim? I beleive open plane will eventually host civil aircraft. There will be an influx of people interested in this sim just for it's great flying and not because you can shoot some one down. Just to take up a beautiful plane you love and tool around in this wonderful virtual air is a thrill to me, and I am not alone.

I have been confering with two legends of the Microsoft Flightsim community (names on request) and they are somewhat interested. One has been to my office and has flown SDOE and was impressed by the physics. They both are unhappy with the current trend in MSFS sims and are looking for a vehicle for their skills. If they come to open plane the dam will break.

Their main complaint has been a limited world. If we can open up the world then they will come. I believe we are sitting on the tip of a very big iceberg and the sun is out.

Just some thoughts,
Hawk

I do believe that you're on to something here Hawk. I once thought it would be fun to sit in a vehicle a shoot at things, I can. I once thought it would be awsom if I could have a sim that had a lifelike pilot, I do. I once thought it would be nice to be able to just drive around and just look, I now can. You see my point and with the great talent that this sim has and the user contributions all this and more has been done. Who knows where this sim will end up or at least the development of an even greater sim using these very ideas and even maybe this sim. This sim should have died as fast as most others have but it didn't and it's inovative thinking that makes it live.

My thoughts

Hawk,

I agree with you. All planes fly very nice in SDOE. It's a really pleasure play with different planes, even the comercial ones like GeeBee.
Thanks for your the great job.

I only read the question. The answer is, why not? This whole thing, at whatever level, is a hobby. If you like to make 1930's racing aircraft, do it! I might not use it in my version of the game but I really think it's slick that it can be done.
It's a really bad thing to stifle creativity(WW1?) just because it's not the game's primary focus. You're making yet another aspect of a terribly fun game.
Don't consider download stats as an indication of interest. You're creating a whole new game. Give it some time and do some advertising. Not every flight sim player wants to be "Joe Fighter Pilot". That's why there are flight sims for Cessna 150's. Not for me maybe, but they sell. Mind you, I consider Jimmy Dolittle as a real hero.
B-25's not withstanding.
Supporting my General.
Sunray.

The whole idea opens doors, and makes use of the engine nicely. It's also different, refreshing, and with plans afoot in the patch world to bring us 'SDOE2' with all the bugs fixed, better lighting ( imagine these colourful planes properly lit ) there is potential here to REALLY widen the audience. And if we can bring in MS fans to a game with proper physics, and proper plane building possibilities with freeware editors, then the market just got a whole lot bigger!

Hawk,
I think having civilian aircraft in SDOE is great! I spend quite a bit of time simply "flying" rather than "fighting".

I would love to see some Golden Age Homebuilt aircraft. I have a soft spot for the Pietenpol Aircamper. I encourage more aircraft of any kind!

MAKE AN AUSTER!!!!!!!!!!

If anyone wants to do an Auster i can give you ANY information you want, cause my Dad owns one (J1-B).

they might be a bit of a handfull to land, but they're all round fun machines that can be both military and civil.

What the hell's an Auster? I have no programming talent, I'm just curious. Got a picture for us all to see?

WHAT!!!

You don't know what an Auster is??
www.kiwiaircraftimages.com/aviation.html

Go to here an look under 'A' for Auster.

http://www.kiwiaircraftimages.com/images/main/00_whitianga/WHITAUS1.JPG

They started out being a liscenced built British copy of the Taylorcraft monoplane before WWII. They were used for Army recon. ('Auster the Steel aeroplane' and 'Eyes of the Army). They did the jon weel due to their short take-off, slow flying ability and ruggedness.

After the war the Auster company (Running out of Exeter airport in England) continued to develop the Auster and sell it to the civil market. They produced many types, and continued for years, until the Americans came along with their 'tinnies' and spoiled everything.

Hawk,

I must say, you're dead on with your evaluation! In fact, I myself have been toying with the idea of making a Cessna 172 for SDOE .

I believe SDOE would make an awesome airshow sim! Especially since it offers stable multiplayer and as such allows you to participate in an online airshow and even do great formation flying. How about creating some Airshow evenings?

Also, you say you tried FS 2000. That may be the most popular civilian flight sim, but the Flight Unlimited II/III series IMHO (and I think Sv shares this opinion) provides a much better feel of flight physics, the surroundings and the overall atmosphere. Try it out if you haven't done so yet! It's not very open, though, so that just might be the main culprit for its lesser popularity.

"kiwi"! That explains it. Here, a 'kiwi' is a fuzzy green fruit or a guy from New Zealand. There's no such thing as an auster unless it's followed by 'ity' or 'litz'. Oh, and our training aircraft are painted yellow and are named after cute little striped rats.

Yes, I love FUIII, best terrain, great sounds - just most immersive... I think what hurt it is the bad frame rates... the FU sims have always pushed the limits, even on the best systems they run slow - not nice and fluid like SDOE. But it is worth the frame rate hit IMO - and if you love clouds, try Fly! - best clouds period. The way you break above them...and the way you break out of them! They do clouds like SDOE BUT they also have horizontal clouds (SDOE are all flat vertical) - so this gives a better "cloud layer" feeling. The sounds in Fly! are the best - but the terrain is worthless. I purchased the Boston area from some company - very good! I can see all the roads in my town - Nashua looks sweet - just stay above 3000 feet
