Drivable Willys' Jeep Version 2.0:

------------------------
CHANGES/ADDITIONS/FIXES:
------------------------

Below is listed the changes and fixes to version 2 in order of importance:

* Made the Jeep MUCH more frame-rate friendly.

* GREATLY reduced engine torque effects. Only Minimal torque will be exhibited when the Jeep is airborne too. However, for the most realistic results, that is, with no rolling effects unless the Jeep hits something, I recommend leaving the engine torque effects off still. It's up to you

* Freer revving engine: Also engine doesn't stall too easily anymore, although it still does if you keep the throttle at minimum (10%) while at a standstill for a long period. Keep throttle at 25% MINIMUM to prevent stalling.

* Moved instruments to a centre panel just fore of the gear lever. This is how it was in real, according to the images I've found on the Willys' Jeep.

* Added Oil Pressure gauge.

* Removed tachometer. Let's face it, the real thing didn't have one, so why should this? You can use the Oil Pressure gauge as a fairly similar gauge of the engines' power output.

* Improved look of gunner crew: 3D model and textures of gunner crew are improved without too much of a frame rate hit, AND, their textures are in the "Aircraft\Jeep\textures\" folder now so you can customize their look if desired without affecting other pilots or gunners in SDOE.

* Added helmet to the driver and gave him better textures: The driver now looks like a soldier, and not an aircraft pilot! Also, he has his own texture in the same directory as described above. Changing these textures will not affect any other pilots or objects in SDOE. ALL textures, except for the machine guns' barrel, are now localised in "Aircraft\Jeep\textures\", so you can tweak away!

* Re-modelled and re-positioned steering wheel to a more realistic position.

* Lowered windscreen slightly: Machine Gun muzzle and muzzle flash was fouling the top frame before.

* Re-modelled and re-positioned front wheel fenders.

* Added chairs to the driver and passenger sides of the Jeep. At last, the driver can get comfy!

* Increased bonnet (hood) open range: Bonnet will now open quicker and rest up against the windscreen when open.

* Moved shovel to rear of vehicle.

Sorry Argon, I couldn't make the mg gunner stay still, he's hidden as part of the loadout when not selected, and he's attached to the machine gun as a child. The MG has a DOF, and he moves with it He doesn't look that bad moving around with the gun though. Oh, and the horn...

Once again, thanks to Razer for the base 3d model and tyres and thanks to the SDOE community for their feedback!

Get it at the URL below:

I'll get on my site and hopefully simfiles soon.

Now I'm off to finish those other vehicles waiting to be done...

This is awesome!!

Imo the gunner SHOULD move with the gun! If you play HD at all, do you know how bad it looks when your soldier takes over a fixed machine gun, but doesn't move around with it? Also makes aiming out of the corner of your eye quite a challenge.

Btw, what's the traversal range on the MG, 360 deg?

Exactly Werner!

I've played H & D heaps and I know exactly what you're saying. So, I guess it's not that bad a thing

The traverse range on the mg is about 60 degrees or thereabouts left to right and elevates around 40 degrees up.

Thanks

Do you still play HD? Have you played it MP at all? I never have but I really want to try sometime.

Yes, I try to play H & D whenever I can pull myself away from SDOE

Never tried MP, willing to try, but although my modem is 56k, my ISP connection rate is 28.8k

Hey great!

Werner, have you ever ben on the back of a Jeep firing a mounted 50 cal? Theres not much room to move around with all the equipment and storage compartments in the way! You may twist your body and step a foot or two in each direction, but you mainly stand still and look the direction the gun is pointing. (I know, Ive fired a 50 cal from the rear of the Jeep )

Thanks Razer, I'm surprised myself

I remember seeing it lonely in AC3D just sitting on a grid mesh wondering...would it ever see the light of SDOEs day? It did

Argon - Given that SDOE can't model the twisting you describe, imo this is better than getting stuck with a static soldier (and view) and a traversing MG. It's all a matter of personal preference of course, I prefer the compromise that allows me to aim the MG properly.

Harman - I'm on 56k too, but I'm willing to give it a shot! I'll be in touch in early May, that's when I'll have enough time to set up a game with you. What timezone are you in? (GMT +/-) I'm GMT -7

Actually, you could model the movement of the head and view. (Similar to how the B-17 nose and waist turrets are set up) And you make the head (If its a seperate object) a CDial that reads off of the view position.
