I post this here because it is your fault. After trying the new patch with the OpenGL support, I finally decided to update my video card to a GeForce MX II. I still have problems with the card but in the install process, I messed up Windows 98. Here is my problem.

The new card worked great in 2D, but would freeze in any 3D program. I followed the instruction completely. It said to
1. Use Add/Remove Programs to remove any current video drivers

2. Go to System icon and remove any Display adapters.

3. Go to Windows/inf and remove any .inf files that might be associated with the old card (This is what got me into trouble.)

Then shut down and install the new card, etc.

After following the instructions the card did not work, I thought it might be a conflict with some old .inf files from previous video drivers I have used in the past. So I deleted anything that I thought might be one, thinking that I could just undelete if this was wrong.

Well after doing that I can no longer go into the "Control Panel". I did undelete the suspected files but still get the following error message.

"An error occurred while Windows was working with the Control Panel file C:\\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DESK.CPL."

I have Windows 98, not the SE edition.

Do I have to reinstall Windows 98?

Can I just copy a new Desk.cpl into the Windows\System directory, If so can one of you that also uses Win 98 Please email me a copy.

Your help is very much appreciated.

Check your email.... The CPL files are what control panel "sees". You can remove many of them with no adverse effects (except you will no longer see them in the control panel). I dont think that is one that can removed without messing things up YES, you can just add the file back in. (Hopefully nothing else was messed up. This is not typically a problem one encounters....

You could try to boot up in safe mode and restore the files and the like...

Sometimes just choosing the standard vga driver will help with that as well. But I too had trouble with my Elsa drivers getting in the way of the Nvidia drivers... luckily I was getting ready to reinstall windows anyway.. so it worked out pretty well for me..
Basically it is telling you that aspects of the control panel for the video settings are gone now and cannot be displayed..... So sometimes going into safe mode, killing anything left in there then loading one of the standard video drivers can fix that kind of problem... it isn't 100%, but it is a nice easy and safe way to get them back again.....

From doing a bunch of video card updates, you shouldn't need to delete the .inf files unless you have a problem.

Should go like this.
1) set display adapter to standard vga & reboot
2) go to install/remove programs and remove any and all utilities (and in some cases drivers will be listed there if they used an installer) associated with the old card
3)shutdown & swap cards
4)reboot & follow instructions for installing new cards drivers.

reboot after new drivers are installed, & all should be ok

One caveat- ATI cards tend to muck up things pretty bad. I have yet to have everything work right when changing from an ATI card to another mfg. In two cases I had to reinstall windows to get rid of the problems.

also, if you do feel that you have to re-instal windows to fix this, it will probably be quicker, no need to reformat or nuthin, just re-instal to the same directory and it will put back whats missing

Actually Jug,
I found if you uninstall the ATI drivers BEFORE you pull the card, it is ok... but if you miss that.... god help your soul... ;}

Wow, Thank you guys for the response. I will try these ideas now. Snickers, thanks for the email.

Thanks again, Now I am half way there, got Control Panel back by installing VGA drivers.

I will contact Hercules about the 3D lock up. I am sure it is a conflict because when I went back to the VGA drivers the Display Properties panel looks normal, but when I update to the NVidia drivers the Display Properties Panel has a tab for "STB Velocity 4400" which was the old card. I think I just have to find the file responsible for this. What a great community, thanks again for your help.

Check the registry for STB and 4400 and TNT. (Just remember there is no undelete in the registry, but you knew that ) I know I have had problems when replacing the 4400 I had to the point the machine would not longer shut off automatically..... (registry conflict or it was looking for something that wasn't there...)

Mirthain,

You're right except

I just replaced a Radeon board and when I tried to uninstall the ati drivers (they appear in add/remove programs), the uninstall failed. Like you said- that's when the nightmare begins.
