I'm no plane maker (yet) But I wanted to see if this version of the P-38 could be made for the game by someone? I think this would only be a modification to a built one. The nickname "Droop Snoop" was given to Lightnings which had bombardier-type noses. These planes carried Norden Bomb sights and guided fleets of bomb laden P-38's to their targets. P-38L's were converted to this role. IP: Logged |

The Norden bombsight was one of the most closely guarded secrets of of the US. military during World War II. Invented by Carl Norden, it was a mechanical analog computer made up of gyros, motors, gears, mirrors, levers and a telescope. It was used to determine the exact moment bombs had to be dropped to hit the target accurately. On later versions of the B-17G, the Nordon bombsight would actually fly the plane through the bomb run while coupled to the airplanes controls. It was claimed to be accurate enough to hit a 100 foot circle from and altitude of 21,000 feet (4 miles). In actual combat conditions its accuracy was usually less than that. Nonetheless, it gave the American bomber crews the ability to cripple the Nazi war machine. IP: Logged |

Razer, could there be a position that you could switch to that would allow you to control the bombadere (sp?) position? Thanks... weaselIP: Logged |

Talking about bombsights, there was also a british bombsight that only a few planes were fitted with. Mainly No#617 and #9 squadrons i think, they must have been quite complex since ,the accuracy 617 displayed droping tallboys and grandslams from 21000 feet on bridges and battleships was pretty amazing too.IP: Logged |

The droop snoot was actually a field mod and had no official designation.... The concept was to use one or two droop snoot planes at tha vangaurd of a flight of P-38's. When the DS dropped its ordinance, the following planes would be able to follow suit. There were actually several different layouts for the glasswork since it was custom...) Razer and I have had email discussions about this before, which is why it is waiting until the 38L is a viable plane (Hey I need reports from my test pilots!!!). Hopefully this can be implimented as a loadout, not a separate plane.... We will see... A variant that has also been requested is the P38L-01-LO (I think I have the numbers right...) This one had no cannon, but 8 50's in the nose and 2 more 50's in gun pods under each wing.... (total of 12 50's!!! OUCH!!) Again, it will probably be impilmented as a loadout (I already have the gun pods ) Snickers =FC=IP: Logged |

Thanks Razer. Say anyone tell me what those pipes in the right hand upper corner are called and what they do in this photo of this P-38 cockpit?

With the exception that a German ex-pat had shipped them the complete blueprint set (or tech drawings) in 1938. Maury IP: Logged |

Updates to the G's? Can't say for sure, all I know is that Heinkel mentions it in his book, and the Ju 88's sight changed in '39 to something similar soon after. Contrast this with things like the Sperry sight and such, which were not seen anywhere else. Maury IP: Logged |
