RendsbergerIinstallation was a snap. Extremely easy and no problems. The Rhineland terrain looks magnitudes better with these textures. Personally, I'll never go back to the original texture. I give it 5 out of 5 stars ------------------ "Where'd he GO!?!?" thunk-thunk-thunk-zing-OUCH That answered my question IP: Logged |

Rendsburger, Installation was very easy indeed, that irfanview software is very usefull. However, after flying in the new theatre, I found out that my desktop properties where somewhat modified : the whole screen was like the gamma (is that the right word)settings of the video card was set to very bright. It reverted to normal after a reboot. Probably one more ATI Drivers story anyway Otherwise it is very pleasant to fly in this environment, I'll probably write a batch to swith for one version to the other. Thanks SailorIP: Logged |

1) InraView is the crappiest piece of software I've seen in a long time. Why can't Windows authors figure out how to make a &*%&^% UI? 2) Why didn't these files come in the converted form already? Going out and downloading some other software to do this seems byzantine. 3) The installer would not allow me to choose the location of the shortcut in the Start menu. You see, I put all my graphics apps in a subfolder called - get this - "Graphics". However their toy installer couldn't support this. 4) Once I did get it and set it up, when I navigate to the downloaded/unzipped folder, it is not at all clear how to make it work. There's something like 20 controls inside the _main_ window of the batch conversion screen! 5) After selecting TIF as the output format, I hit the options button. What should I select in here? Can't you just convert them? Is there a copyright issue? Luckily the results are definitely worth it, this terrain is WAY better than the old one. Maury IP: Logged |

Maury, 1)hmm, i donīt know any other grafic converter software that works so easy. No idea why u have so much trouble with it. 2) Thatīs my compromise between the slow upload tranferrate of my 56kb modem. Now u have a 4.5MB small file. Look at the other terrain files like RhinelandWinter, you have more that 20 MB to download (thatīs not what i want to upload). 3)??? No idea, i can put the files whereever i want. 4)Ok, itīs overloaded,i agree. 5)Nothing or LZW compression. 6)No, i realy donīt want to do this.Sorry, but i canīt help much more. It's not "trouble", it's just that I hate (with a pashion) sucky UI's. I hate the very idea that someone will release crappy software simply because they can't be bothered to use a better installer. That's why I hate Linux. quote: 2) Thatīs my compromise between the slow upload tranferrate of my 56kb modem. Now u have a 4.5MB small file.
That's interesting. Why doesn't the game simply use the format you uploaded? quote: 3)??? No idea, i can put the files whereever i want.
This is is _their_ problem, not yours. It's just a crappy installer. 5)Nothing or LZW compression. Is there any effect of changing this? I seem to have LZW, and I notice that the terrain seems less sharp - less sharp that your screen snaps above in fact. Also I get a bad "patching" effect where the towns are much higher resolution and a different colour (much brighter). Hmmm, maybe it's only finding some and not all of the images? Maury IP: Logged |

Thanks Rensburg,Love the new terrain. Installed flawlessly. I converted using the ACDsee program because I paid for it, I might as well us it. Everything worked perfectly. The jpeg kept the download smaller which is much appreciated. Thanks again. Riverrat out!

[QUOTE]Maury posted: gripe gripe gripeMaury, the terrain is provided FREE, irfanview is provided FREE. Do you realize how many tiles there are in the terrain and how LONG it takes to get the effect just right (if quality is a major concern, which, from all of Rendsberger's contributions is something he cares about)? Yet, you spent most of your time complaining about the install process. If you hate irfanview that much, go BUY a piece of software you like for batch conversion. As for the interface for irfanview, I thought it was pretty self-explanatory. If you think the terrain needs an installer, why not offer to HELP. "Never look a gift horse in the mouth" advice I've always found true. You might get bit. I saw a lot of griping and no real solutions being offerred. Did you provide an alternative fo irfanview- no. Did you offer to help with an installer, or recommend one-no. The jpg format DRASTICALLY reduces file size, much more than any archiving utility (zip, tar, arj, etc). This is a big help for people with 56k modems. Makes me really defensive for Rendsberger and all his work. At least you did end with a compliment. Rendsberger: again, I VERY much appreciate your work. Thanks again. [This message has been edited by Da Jug head (edited 03-10-2001).] IP: Logged |

Great job Rendesburger! I understand why you used jpegs and suggesting InfranView. Unfortunately, when you do this, some of the detail gets lost. Its a good trade off though since NOBODY likes to UPload or DOWNload huge terrain files...even me! The texture is a nice change from the dark and dreary. Welcome to terrain texturing Maury, WTF?
