This might not be the idea you're looking for, but...

MacPlay will soon be releasing the game for the Mac. I've talked to them about the PlanePacks, and I think they might be open to the idea of burning CD's for them. You might want to drop them a line asking for this, if there's enough demand, who knows?

I doubt Angelfire (my site) supports resume, but simfiles does.

However, it may be easier to contact Spoonman to arrange this - He has a CD set that he put together a while ago.

Good News .......

I've got Download Accelerator and finally have it downloading from Spins Website...AND
Resume Support is enabled.

1. After New Windows Install.

2. Downloaded the NEW Version 4.3 beta
the file name is DAP43.EXE Search the web it's on Znet etc

3. AND most importantly From within the Options Menu of DAP I have enabled
FTP to use PASV mode ( sometimes also required behind a firewall ) **as it says** it's a tick box at the bottom

And it's working..
I suggest you try OPTION 3 first as that maybe the answer I was after all along.

Option 2 is worth it afterwards, for the sake of an upgrade. and to confirm If it was the new version that worked.

And Option 1 well,,,I'm the sucker

PlanePACK 6.0 is the CURRENT ONLINE STANDARD
Planepack 6.1 beta2 is A BETA.. don't download if your not wanting download again pretty soon on a 56K.
1 hour 45 Mins my estimated time at the moment (2.9kbps)

Don't download it it if your not familar with Swapping files or backing up files.

Do download it if you are confident and want to help test it.

Darthbob : putting the add-ons, especially the big ones like PP, on PC games magazines is something I've tried to get done locally (in France) but so far not succeded. The game is simply too old I guess. I have a good contact with one of them and I'll try again when PP 6.1 is finalized.
Maury : do you mean that an editor could include the free add-ons made by everyone here into a new release ? I was wondering wether there would be an ethical problem there : selling for profit something freely available on the net. Would the editor have to ask all the developpers of all the objects included ? I think the question is interesting as the game is very different now from what it was 2 years ago.

I guess we should see who wants to release their planes under an open source liscence.

This would mean people could put the planes on a cd and sell them only for a nominal fee, i.e., cost of materials & shipping plus the time to burn & package the cd's. If they want to include something else they've developed with the CD, then they can charge more.

This is the reason you can go to the store and buy a Linux distribution for $30 that you can download from the web for free. What you are really paying for is the printed manual, the time it took them to collect all of the addon software, test it for compatibility and of course, the packaging. Inaddition, opensource states the source code needs to be included to be freely distributable (sm files fit that bill), and the author needs to be give credit. In addition open source states modifications can be made and the product released as long as the original author is credited.

Per the usual interpretation of law, all of the current planes that have been downloaded would be considered to fall under under the open source, or freeware classification. This is because the have already been freely available to the public.

Since very few are released with any claim of copyright whatsoever, MacPlay is being nice about this.

Although these planes are professional in quality, most people have developed them as part of a hobby they've been introdued to through open plane. In addition, if they start selling their aircraft, this could then run into liscencing issues with open plane.

Let's not let visions of dollars kill what has been developed so far. Myself and others have spent countless hours on websites. Some of these sites provided the info the developers used to learn how to make planes in the first place. We don't / didn't do this for money either, but rather to increase interest in what has become one of our favorite hobbies.

If Macplay includes the plane pack and still charges their original asking price for the game, they aren't making money off the CD's directly. But they are helping the SDOE community grow.

If you want to see an explosion in the numbers of the SDOE community, let them ad a plane pack CD, but tell them the add-on CD has to be released as open source or freeware and needs to be labeled as such. There are a LOT of talented artists and 3D modellers in the Mac community, and this would only take aircraft development to a new level.

One other note. If you'd like to see the chance for more open plane sims and see open plane developed to it's full potential, then the community should be the ones going to MacPLay, Stormbirds and Wings with Wires offering to let them use the material already developed. Doing so will ensure that open plane sims will be released down the road that surpass what you've heard about IL-2 Sturmovik.

Well, there's my 2 cents

Back to the download issue.

I will post the plane packs on my nbci site broken down into floppy sized pieces (1.3MB) using HJSplit. This will probably be done Tuesday night

HJSplit is freeware and can already be downloaded from the nbci site. Also the Nations V2 update is available there as a set of floppy sized downloads. You have to download the HJsplit program as this reassembles the files into the original zip you get from simfiles.

If you need it, go here: http://members.nbci.com/fs_pilots

I'll host these files until they kick me off for exceeding bandwidth requirements , Then I'll find a new place to post it.

Huh? International issues aside, I thought the basis of copyright law was: by default, you can not redistribute a work without written consent from its author. The fact you obtained it for free does not mean you can put your copyright on it and sell it.

I agree a kind of open source license would be the best option... But maybe not everyone will agree. There's already been problems with people who complained when their work was mirrored on FSHangar.

Pachy,

This has been challenged before. The idea is that if it has already been made freely available to the public with no copyright notice or restrictions, this is interpreted as "implied consent". Been challenged by authors, been lost.

Some of the aircraft are released with a notice and therefore do not fall under this category. The only option for authors that have run into this is to write a new version and release it under the copyright laws.

This issue has even been challenged in regards to graphics obtained off the net for free. This has happened where the artist had no copyright statement or restrictions posted at his site. The artist lost in every case where his art was being used in a commercial endevor. The old implied consent bit them.

This may not be fair, but it was a subject I followed closely a few years back.

I wouldn't worry about them selling stuff that's available on the 'net. Microsoft does it all the time.

You could just wiggle the mouse every 18 minutes or so (disconnects if not in use for 20 minutes). Annoying, but you do get ntl for free...

Vugel & Burkey,

A lot of ISP's disconnect after a certain amount of time if they see no activity from your end. This is to keep their lines from being tied up.

Click below and download the keep it up file. It's a freeware program. It pings the server every couple of minutes to it looks like someone is active on your end. One friend forgot about it and it kept his connection open overnight. If you're going to be on-line for a long time, you need to install firewall software. Get it at www.zonelabs.com It's free.

KeepItUp http://members.nbci.com/fs_pilots/KeepItUpZip.zip

Hope this helps.
