Actually, tests have shown that Win98 2nd Editon is a better gaming platform than Win2k or WinME.

That patch has been out for over a year.

The patch works fine. If they didnt bother to write patches, then I would be pissed.

The schoolmusic.com Win2k server has not been rebooted in over a year... and it pushes allot of business through every day. It has IIS, MTS, and SQL server all on one box. Plus 3 web sites, 4 databases for 2 forums - and a Roger Wilco base server to boot! Every night the machine backs up the databases and ftp's them to the office to go on tape.

I am kind of amazed... compared with NT... my NT system had to be rebooted at least every month, sometimes daily if we had bad code on it somewhere.

MS is at their best when it comes to the web and client server. SQL server is an amazing product in every aspect. ASP is a web breakthrough. COM is really panning out well... and transaction server is just starting to become a standard time saving wonder tool.

I guess win98 and such still sucks... but I don't know much about that...

Sv,

That is a good record, but what are the liscencing fee's for all that wonderful software compared to running against a free setup using Linux, postgresSQL, PHP, sendmail, Apache, chron and SSL? (this would be like including BackOffice into the windows system, so you have to include that in the total of the items listed above)

The uptime on these sytems is the same as, if not better than Win2k. Plus at ComDEX, they were cracking the security on Win2k servers in less than five minutes running a utility in a turbolinux cluster. They were letting sysadmins familiar with win2k set up the security however they wanted. The Linux servers took longer to break into. To be fair, with the horsepower they had in the cluster, nothing could (or in fact did) stand up to it.

Also, did you hear about the security challenge Gates threw out? It was intended to help find security holes in Win2K. A group of hackers broke into it in less than 2 hours. SUSE Linux did the same challenge and it took 2 days. The hackers said it would have taken longer except there was a known security patch SUSE forgot to install before issuing the challenge. I read about this on a big windows gung ho site; Ziff-Davis, not a Linux site.
