The first screen is in game with a test terrain. Nat built it much the same way a he built Stalingrad. We've tried two textures so far, a full blown winter scheme and the one you see.

The second image is of a work in progress.

Go check out the screens here http://paintshed.users1.50megs.com/

I had to go look again... and then I noticed the sky in the second pic. Is that a new sky for SDOE?

Upate...actualy read the page, and I guess the second pic (Malta) is not an "in game" pic.

first pic is a shot of SDOE terrain but shadows are simulated or it's a 3DMAX render.

shot 2 is a MAX render and not a real in game shot.

sorry, hate to burst your bubble.

You know, if the "sun" never moves, and the terrain never moves, what difference does it make if the shadows are part of the texture, or rendered real-time? They're lookin' REAL good, fellas.

Sorry for the french, but the only way my limited vocabulary can respond is, "HOLY SHIT! That looks GREAT!"
Hey, after this could I interest you guys in doing a better desert ? Perhaps a make-over of the rhineland to use a base? We really could use one for even more diversity...Also another question ,could, say the african terrain be altered by rotating it 180 degrees & eliminating the islands(or moving them)to more easily create yet another terrain, perhaps called a "coastal terrain"?
It would be cool for the NAC!!!

Hey guys, yeah the top pic is in SDOE, the shadows are textured, but the terrain looks simply amazing when you fly over it, to be honest, I've not seen a more realistic looking terrain. The mountains are high and the valleys are deep, overcast cloud missions mean the the peaks of the highest mountians push up through the cloud layer, that looks damn cool Also, it can be a little interesting if you go diving through the cloud layer when you don't know if you'll see the ground before you hit it you might.. there again, you might not hehe, btw, glide is the best mode to use for that terrain, until and unless Bryan fixes clipping issues with the D3D renderer.

The second terrain I myself haven't started on yet, once Diego does the disp map I'll build it, it WILL NOT be easy (terrain modeling is easy), getting the cliffs is going to be damn hard and take me quiet some time I think, thats hoping that in the end I can do it. Max like to smooth things out, so cliffs are very very hard to do, but we'll work on it

Oh, and the pic really doesn't do the terrain justice it does look so damn real when you're flying over it

Diego,

I'm sure you've looked at this but in case you haven't, the Island terrain has some pretty detailed shadow effects in it. You may want to have a look at the model for it to figure out if similar dynamic lighting effects can be replicated.

Looks pretty much like a 162 put into a photograph to me. Cool! The cliffy thing would make a really slick ice pack for a Russian Convoy mission if it was white. Imagine, Uboats and Scharnhorsts and Stukas. Oh, my!

Well, I guess the team is on the right track judging by the comments.

Actually niether of the images are in 3DMax, the first is in fact in-game and the second is in Terragen. If you never heard of it, I suggest you check it out. For freeware its pretty damn powerful and very easy to use. Here is the link http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/

The light and shadows were textured on the terrain so basically any terrain can have this done to it, as long as you have a greyscale displacement map.

Hello: Thank you Diego for the fact of Stalingrado (it was always the battle that but I rouse myself), so I wait with longings to know that land.
The land of the second image is something incredible, it seems exit of a documentary of the Discovery Chanel. Ahead with the works.
