Does anyone know if the Mac version's multiplayer will be compatible with the PC version?IP: Logged |

Hmmm... I doubt it Spin. It's not too terribly likely that they implemented the 1.5 patch done by MH into the Mac version. When the new patch work gets done it almost certainly won't be compatible with the Mac version. Either of these items would practically guarantee that online between Mac and PC versions is not going to happen. -Stark IP: Logged |

Actually it is common practice for a developer to incorperate all patches before porting or rereleasing a product. Not to say they will, but it would surprize me if they didn't. But I'm sure the unsuported patch will break it. Maybe the unsuported patch could be ported to the Mac version as well. This would be great in expanding the player base of the game.IP: Logged |

Is there an official website for the Mac version of FS anywhere? I failed to find one at MacPlay or at udgames.com. If anyone knows, please post the URL.Thanks. IP: Logged |

Guys, it is true, it's really coming! I met the guy (ONE guy!) who is porting it over from PC to Mac. He's very smart and is making good progress. The Mac world should be very pleased.IP: Logged |

The multiplayer will not be compatible. They wrote a new networking layer that replaces ActiveNet.I believe all of the add-ons should work unchanged. I have to agree with Pete about the guy doing the port. He's impressive. He visited Inertia/UDGames and we got to meet him when a group of us went to lunch. IP: Logged |

Would it be possible for the patch makers to go with the same technology instead of activenet?IP: Logged |

What about performance and quality? Can anyone say how the Mac version will improve on the current v1.5 code? The release date of the Mac version is after the beginning of OS X's availability ...suggesting a native OS X port perhaps... I'd like to see a BeOS port (laughter errupts). IP: Logged |

I just received a reply from Jason Whong at MacPlay, here's what he said about Mac networking and the standards the PC guys use online:"As for the networking, it's too early to tell, plus those files mentioned in "online standard" are not part of the real product, except for the 1.50 patch, which will be incorporated into our first release. But I'll see if I can get it into the game." Kinda like an afterthought, though maybe I'm just reading it incorrectly. BB IP: Logged |

Its too bad the Mac and PC versions will not be net play compatable. Hopefully for mac users, though, it will be playable over GameRanger. MacPlay/United Developers have supported it in the pastIP: Logged |

why don't you mac people just build a pc, hardware is really cheap now, especially if you build an athlon pc the 1ghz chip is like $150 i think and the ram is lowest it's ever been. Plus with the release of the geforce 3 really soon the geforce 2 prices will plummet. you could build a killer rig in under $700 if you got the monitor and speakers already.IP: Logged |

I don't know enough about porting (or even the newer MacOS - still on 8.1 myself) to know whether or not this is a silly question, but I'm wondering if there will be optimization for AltiVec.If so I might have to upgrade. I'm an upgrade slug. I mean I'm very slow at it. IP: Logged |

Zool,Having owned a Mac I can honestly say that going and building a PC is pretty well out of the question. There are so many reasons to stick to a Mac and never get a PC. System stability is a big one. Once a Mac lover always a Mac lover. One of the only reasons I bought a PC was for games. The other was peripherals. With a mac version of SDOE it may just be time to buy a new one.

Please, please, nobody suggest Mac users build a game PC. We've been through this flame war at least once before. It may have been back on Pete's board. It doesn't matter how reasonable you think you're trying to be. It ain't never gonna happen, so best let the idea drop. IP: Logged |

Mighty,Good reply. Telling a Mac owner to build a PC is like telling a Chevy owner to trade in his car for a Ford(or vice versa). All that happens is it raises some hackles and causes people to get defensive. Have you or anyone talked to them about doing some online testing with people running the PC version? This seems like a very important point, yet I've heard nothing about it. IP: Logged |
