Wood is a really good material for damage absorbtion! Just can't see them finding enough to build 747's that way.... IP: Logged |

hey look at that pic of the cat, I counted 60 bullet holes. there are over 50 with out a doubt. they have to be either 30 or 50 cal holes and it was ball ammo or AP, but not explosive type. note it did little damage.IP: Logged |

P-47 damaged by a flak hit damage to a P-47's rudder by 1 20mm explosive rd. note the large holes are 20mm explosive rds and the small holes are 7.92mm mg rds IP: Logged |

I found a web site that has tons of damaged a/c pics in the thumb nail format. it varies from 30cal, 20mm, etc. http://free.prohosting.com/~kopper/acdamg.htm pics there are like this which appears to be 2 20mm cannon rds that damaged this B-24. IP: Logged |

yes I know will I ever get enough. here is a good pic of the difference in size of the rds used in american aircraft. the .30 cal (which is bigger than the 7.92 and .303 in length) the .50cal bmg and the 20mm rd for the hispano. last post promise. IP: Logged |

It ain't the length of the case. It's the size and make up of the projectile. ie: a .303 British bullet is bigger in diameter than a .30 US bullet. (.315" vs .308") A 20mm projectile is much bigger than either and much bigger than a .50" BMG bullet. However, the 20mm carried an explosive warhead. The .50 did and does not. The classic example of case length vs power is the 7.62x39 AK-47 round. It's muzzle velocity is about the same as a .303 British round, (2400 fps) but with half the case length. If you're interested in ballistics, I suggest you read Hatcher's Notebook. He was a US Gen'l that worked between the wars on all this stuff. I can dig my copy out and post the publisher, etc. if you'd like me to. Sunray out.IP: Logged |
