Did B-17s or Heinkels have nighttime infared bomb sights? And can this be incororated into the game?--Mud--IP: Logged |

I dont think any plane during WWII had infared anything. If they did the all airforces would have done nighttime bombing.IP: Logged |

I think the Germans were working on Night Vision during the war, but it never came to much. I read a pretty good novel a while back called "The Master Sniper" (not based on the same story as Enemy @ the Gates) which suggested they had some experimental sniper night vision sights, but I doubt it since the story was pure fiction. hehe, I think like most things, had A.H. had another decade and a little more faith in his scientists they would have had atomic bombs, night vision, stealth (Go229+...) and a fleet of "AmerikaBombers". Scary thought. Werner ------------------ Visit Abbeville Field Today! IP: Logged |

Werner it is my understanding they did not need a decade... just Hitler having more faith in it and a little more time... I mean when you think what they did have already... the Go 229, and after all we got our steath form captured Germany WW II aircraft... no some of that stuff they where close to having, too close. But Night vision or infra-red? other then radar... I doubt it. I remeber they had some type of special set up for the bombaders but I was not paying attention when I heard it. ------------------ Wait I do not know how to fly this plane.... oh geezz...[This message has been edited by Starfire (edited 02-11-2001).] IP: Logged |

THe JU88 experimented with infrared. Infrared was also used on tanks and on MP44 assault rifles. These equipped a experimental unit. They used half tracks to carry a much larger infrared light. (i.e. support vehicle)Unfortunately I cannot find the book that described the JU88 stuff. Scott IP: Logged |

The Germans had special platoons of night-fighting tanks. Panthers were fitted with infrared periscopes and sights, backed up by an Sd.Kfz 251[some number] with a big IR light. It was called the 'Uhu,' (Owl). Also, infrared sights, called 'Vampir,' (Vampire) were fitted to Mauser K98r sniper rifles, not MP-44's. IP: Logged |

I just did aquick search on the net and came up with good ole achtung panzer. It says the sites are on the MP44...Dragon models have both the Panther (I got it) and the troops all equipped with IR. http://www.achtungpanzer.com/ir.htm I can't find anything on Ju88 with IR though. 'FUG 280 “KIEL” The Kiel was a passive IR vision detector developed by Zeiss. It operated using lead-sulphite photo-cells amplified in a vision screen. Its range was about 4000 m, weighted only 42 kg. Only few devices were built. 'IP: Logged |

Its range was about 4000 m, weighted only 42 kg. Only few devices were built. This could what it is all about. I have seen a photo where the screens are placed on the forward windows. I never said it was a success. It was OK. (I am not sure the above is the same thing though.) IP: Logged |
