I just thought of a new idea to try that will add LOTS of atmosphere to this game. I'm going to try it real soon and will post some pics too. Curious what it is? Here goes...

You fly a mission, make it back and land safely. Park the plane, turn off the engines and press a "maintenance" key. In doing this a man appears to walk up to your engine and open up the cowling, revealing a nice textured engine and then swings a small hammer (or turns a screw-driver, whatever you want really) until you press the key again. Then he closes it up, climbs down and walks away and vaporizes into the thin air from whence he came.

This could also be done for a fuel truck as well. Press a key, a truck then pulls up from the wingtip into position for refueling. You could even have a man and hose extend into position on the wing by the gascap. He does his thing for a bit, press key again and he rolls up the hose and drives off.

It'd add some work to each airplane, but I'm thinking of doing this on the B-17 first. What do ya think?

Hawk,

I think it would be spectacular, especially if fuel flowed, repairs made, guns rearmed.
I have been an advocate for an Integrated Combat Turn for Falcon 4 for some time.
Seeing it in SDOE would be dazzling!

Bomber intercept missions the way they were meant to - the germans could land, rearm and refuel, and hit the bombers until you either run out of plane, pilot, or bombers.

I've been wanting something like this since I did the DFC, this way, you could write multi-sortie senerios. It would be great!

With the aircraft Argon. It's very easy to do. You just add the associated parts to the SM file (near bottom of the list in OPS), assign DOFs to the parts, etc. Simply make them hidden when not in use. Theoretically it should be a piece of cake. I'll try and get something done as a test in the near future. If anyone wants to beat me to it feel free! I just wanted to put the idea out there for everyone to ponder.

But what happens when you press the key in mid-air? The little mechanic comes out and fixes up your plane whilst flying?

That's half the fun of this being a sim, you can do that if you want to. On my C-5 (still in construction) I love to fly around and open up the visor (entire nose) in flight!

umm forgive me for sounding stupid but just how much would the mech fix on the plane or is it purely for visual effect. I know the idea of more ammo was mentioned and refueling. I mean in flight half the fun is the limited ammo and fuel sometimes.
But if you make it to the ground and still need to take off for some reason it like having the AI fly bombers but you provide the "local" air cover for them...
Having any minor engine damage repaired and ammo done then might be more fun...
Sometimes i hate it when I can not sleep.

Argon - You can fold the corsair's wings in flight, so I don't think that should be reason for Pete not to build this. I wonder how you can convince the plane's ammo and fuel have been refilled though.

Actually, folding the wings and seeing how long you can control it for is lots of fun.

LoL Werner I know... It is fun. But a little guy walking in mid-air with a wrench seems a bit too much. Reminds me of that car commercial where a mechanic hears a noise on a car that is moving down a road and he gets out and does a full body inspection at 30+ mph.

Great idea!
O man,if this were possible,a lot of player
would end their mission on the airfield and
not in the air by hitting the" Esc " Key.
btw,what does LoL mean?

How about something along the lines of a tech coming in-- opening the front panel of the P-38- checking the guns- and putting it back. Very cool!!

is there any way we could actuly get this to work properly..so u can land then re-fuel and rearm and go off to fight again.

also we cound have it so that it could only work when the gear was down engines stoped props stationery and brakes on then u would need to land to get it to work.

i'd be happy with just a square at the end of a runway where we can park and be held there for 30 sec to 1 min and have it rearm and refuel the plane. It doesn't fix damge just rearm and refuel (this is how Aces high does it)

I don't need all the trucks and animated stuff but it would be nice to has this to help make online missions last longer then what they do now.

It is a brilliant idea! But that supposes that all the planes must be modified (keepingin mind that a mechanic opens the canopy for the operations of maintenance.)
How to manage the position of the mechanic on such or such plane, a lot of chance to see this one floating in airs because the wings where he should be standing are not at the same level than another plane.

Although that would boost the interest of the game. It is really a brilliant idea.

How about a breaking DOF under a big "base" that can be placed at the airfield. when you roll onto the "base", the DOF gets broken, activates other DOFs that cause fuel truck and service trucks to roll up to the edge of the "base"...

not as good as having service guys for every plane, but a little easier to implement.

Can this be done?
