I have a Voodoo5 and it's a wonderful card, but the technology is dated and i think theres a few Geforce models that work better then the Voodoo5. This coming from a guy that use to say "3DFX or not at all" means a lot.

maybe it's just the games i play but i haven't been getting that good of frame rates lately.

Vagner - I'm in the same boat you are, looking to acquire a card in the very near future. Almost all the opinions I have been offered suggest to look at the GeForce 2 line of cards (there are a few variations apparently) as a good balance between speed, support and cost. I looked at the Nv20 (next gen. GeF2) but they're awfully expensive.

Well I like Voodoo. I always have. One thing they can do is Glide. (No other card maker can do Glide) GeForce cards cant do Glide... Its a proven fact that SDOE runs better in Glide. It all depends on what you want to play really. It does a good job with CFS2 and B-172 aswell. But people are right when they say the technology is becomming dated. But I like Glide, I still play alot of games that use Glide thus I bought a V5 5500. I get pretty good frame rates in all of my games and I payed less that $180 for this baby. Im a happy customer. Keep in mind that this is a HUGE card tho. I found that out the hard way. Oh BTW it also has DvD hardware support.

Directly from the 3dfx website:

"After aggressively pursuing a wide range of options that take into consideration the interests of our creditors, our shareholders, our employees and our customers," said Alex Leupp, president and CEO, 3dfx Interactive Inc., "we strongly believe that to reduce expenses, sell our assets and dissolve the company provides the highest return to our creditors, shareholders, and employees."

"We expect that the combined technologies of 3dfx and NVIDIA will continue the legacy that 3dfx began in 1994, " Leupp continued. "NVIDIA is the number one supplier of graphics technology to the OEM market. With the addition of 3dfx's high-quality technology that leads the retail market, we believe the combination of the two will result in even greater PC graphics leadership."

This should answer your question.

One more thing to consider. If the coice is between a GeForce MXII and an ATi Radeon DDR card, the Radeon is the better card. But if you have a chance to pick up a full blown GeForce2, go for it.

BTW, you can get a ATI 32MB Radeon DDR card at z-buy.com for $100 (Retail version, not white box).

Thanks guys
I also play glide games *sigh* so looks like its a balancing act. I dont suppose Nvidia
will be making a new card with glide soon
(or ever). I have an old Monster diamond
accelerator card around here somewhere (ya know the ones that add glide to yer 2D card)
Or I could just stick it out with my trusty
V3000. I guess I want my cake and eat it too!
btw am I the only one disapointed to tears by B17II?

I love my Voodoo5, and it seems to me that while the specs and features of the g-force cards look good, the image they produce does not. Voodoo looks better, works better, and is faster.

Even with the amazing build-up aside, B17 II was a huge disappointment to me. Even the things I thought would make it worthwhile proved to be a let-down. The virtual cockpit did not look and feel nearly as good as I had hoped. About the only good thing that can be said is that the crew animation looks great! Also, as a non-sim RPG type of a game it might be quite good, I can not day because I did not explore this area.

As far as the sim aspect, it completely fails to suspend disbelief. Everywhere you look you see signs that you are on a game board, not in a sim. There are odd model constructions that show the smoke and mirrors - the flight model feels like you might as roll dice and move five squares forward.

The terrain concept just does not work, clever try - but no cigar. The B17 model does not look even as good as SDOE's except in a few places right near the cockpit or the guns. Not being able to smooth-pan the cockpit with full control is a big minus for me.

And the crashing and ditching, suck-o-rama. Is this CFS? Or maybe ATARI's Defender? Oh sorry, I did not mean to insult Defender

But these notes are based on my sim ideal- clearly the trade offs they chose to make focused the "sim" on a different aspect than I enjoy. I would not argue that the spirit wasn't in the right place.. I really think they believed that they were on the right path...

If this game had on-line play then it might have reached another dimension- but I have always maintained that what they proposed would never happen- not because I believe it is impossible, but they did not sell it in a convincing way. They let on that they had no idea of how they could get what they wanted working and delivered in a reasonable amount of time.

The poster is cool though

Ooh, hadn't thought about glide vs d3d. Is it possible to either:

a) Have a Banshee and a GeForce2 in the same machine and switch back and forth?

b) Run SDOE in d3d without the graphics (like the runway for instance) showing up all messed?

I know I've heard of people using an A/B switch or something for choosing between 2 video cards unless it was a dream or maybe it was those "special mushrooms" (I dont really do any drugs) but I think it can be done I just dunno how I do know a guy who has a V5 and has sdoe installed and he has invited me to come over and check it out. He doesnt play sdoe (noones perfect I guess) but he has it on his hard drive so if I can I will go tommorow (friday) and see. He has an AMD 700 I have a P3 700 hope that doesnt make a difference VV
