I love my Voodoo5, and it seems to me that while the specs and features of the g-force cards look good, the image they produce does not. Voodoo looks better, works better, and is faster.Even with the amazing build-up aside, B17 II was a huge disappointment to me. Even the things I thought would make it worthwhile proved to be a let-down. The virtual cockpit did not look and feel nearly as good as I had hoped. About the only good thing that can be said is that the crew animation looks great! Also, as a non-sim RPG type of a game it might be quite good, I can not day because I did not explore this area.
As far as the sim aspect, it completely fails to suspend disbelief. Everywhere you look you see signs that you are on a game board, not in a sim. There are odd model constructions that show the smoke and mirrors - the flight model feels like you might as roll dice and move five squares forward.
The terrain concept just does not work, clever try - but no cigar. The B17 model does not look even as good as SDOE's except in a few places right near the cockpit or the guns. Not being able to smooth-pan the cockpit with full control is a big minus for me.
And the crashing and ditching, suck-o-rama. Is this CFS? Or maybe ATARI's Defender? Oh sorry, I did not mean to insult Defender
But these notes are based on my sim ideal- clearly the trade offs they chose to make focused the "sim" on a different aspect than I enjoy. I would not argue that the spirit wasn't in the right place.. I really think they believed that they were on the right path...
If this game had on-line play then it might have reached another dimension- but I have always maintained that what they proposed would never happen- not because I believe it is impossible, but they did not sell it in a convincing way. They let on that they had no idea of how they could get what they wanted working and delivered in a reasonable amount of time.
The poster is cool though
