Was thinking, after helping Pye's friend out today, that maybe when can schedule and post a newbie online night once a month. I would be willing to volunteer the time. If we have enough new people show we could always hop over to one of the other servers. The idea would be to have one tutor to explain how it works, and one experienced flyer for every 3 new guys. Turn respawn on and tellthem we'll play for 10-15 minutes, then everybody out of the pool for a debriefing and then jump back into another game. The thoughts on the ratio and respawn are the newbies fly against the experienced guys. 3 or 4 to 1 should be about even The guy I helped out today had a couple of common misconceptions about how the missions were started (same ones I had at first) and we were able to walk it through one step at a time- next time he'll be joining the main group. Waddya think? I'd be glad to do this. ------------------ "Where'd he GO!?!?" thunk-thunk-thunk-zing-OUCH That answered my question IP: Logged |

From a personal standpoint, I think it a excellent idea. I will help if available ( usually only on Saturday evenings, after 6 pm California time.).

Newbie night is a great concept, but don't be surprised if the number of "Newbie" pilots is smal at first. It will take some advertizing to get the word out. Maybe SimHq would post a blurb for you, and I know another online rag that might also. Another possible issue is that the wolves might come out to pick on the poor newbies. Guys who will do anything for an easy kill. But, if you have it late on Saturday night I'll be in bed already. ; ) PR=FC= IP: Logged |

Great idea! I hope to get back to some online flying soon. I had to give it up when my connection went bad last spring but cable is in the near future. Then I will need your "newbie" re-training :-)------------------ Hawk Forum manager and bar keep http://rcwarbirds.com/ IP: Logged |

Someone stole my plan! Actually not every month I was thinking of, I had in mind as I started posting about the squad wars and the Start Times. Was to have an Hour before these Scheduled Squad Wars a New Pilot, Help get you going! session The reason being as Da Jug,also kindly proved, more pilots Experienced like and don't mind giving up there time and are available on these regular meetings. Was my sole intention yesturday to help newbies, Unfortunatly you cannot help very much when you got a game set up with 8 players and you are the host of the mission Good lesson which has been learnt for the NEW PILOT Evenings. Thanks for helping out Da Jug,, you were a star in offering to help out. I would had 6 unhappy pilots grumbling at me for cancelling the mission after waiting so long, Actually the grumbling anyway, because thats just their sense of humour all good guys by the way so theres another for the books If a pilot is having difficulty going green ie ready to fly! then it's a mod ,, causing a problem maybe,, In this case it was a DM model Mod,, I would never have got that one as I havn't tried out the Damage model mod.

Thanks Charles, I'm glad I could help. I was calling you "the guy" because some people are sensitive about having other people know they needed help.Your experience was similar to mine, the first time I tried- I finally backed out because of plane incompatibilities. Only problem was no one could figure out what the reason was (incuding me). That's why I now have two installations- the online std and the "put everything in including the kitchen sink" installation. Pye- actually Charles was the one that thought about the Engine DM. Newbies can be quick! I'll add a tutorial to the website I'm putting together. We can point the new pilots there and they can read up before the schduled night. This will help people getting the game with no manual. ------------------ "Where'd he GO!?!?" thunk-thunk-thunk-zing-OUCH That answered my question IP: Logged |

This is a great idea--and I'd love to offer any help to any newbie anytime. And, although I've been playing this game as long as anybody--don't be intimidated--I still stink--so you don't have to worry like you do with Pye!! hehe AQ IP: Logged |

Great Idea, Having played SDOE off line for about 2 years now and never dared to try on-line I'm very interested. I'll be off on a business trip next week but when I'm back I'll be 'the guy who needs help' (again). PS : are your US schedules compatibles with our European ones ? Tks Sailor

Da Jug Head, we can put a link on our website when you have it going. It was 2 years ago that I was first helped Online by some really helpfull people, I couldn't believe everyone that was in the lobby was trying to Help me get in their game All Newbies (Referring to online play only) can rest assured the people who generally fly this simulation Online are not of the Go,,,Go,,,Go mentality,,,I mean for example Rogue Spear,, you enter the lobby and ask for help and you get every typing Go,,Go,, GO , even the host! 3 minutes later it's the same story!! Personnally I've received offers from help with this from others who haven't posted here, and with this. We can arrange dates that suit most people as those trying to help now are from both sides of the Atlantic. This SATURDAY and SUNDAY at 7:30pm GMT (UK) is designated Newbie ZONE time,,,, Meeting in the Lobby called Califirnia 12. Our 3 New Pilots for online play are Grand Charles, Rittbear and Starfire, I hope others reading this might want to come along,, keep an eye of them online fellas This SATURDAY and SUNDAY at 7:30pm GMT (UK) is designated Newbie ZONE time,,,, Meeting in the Lobby called California 12, IF you are reading this and are new,, PLEASE feel free to turn up..don't be shy !! Hello Sailor!,,, excuse the punThere a quite a few of us in your exact time zone. I'm in spain, If you can't find anyone make sure you drop by www.luftwaffe.net and leave a message for me on our Bulletin Baord. We will have you shooting at real pilots in no time. The time zones do take an effort to bridge on weekdays,, your looking at a late night early morning, flying with the New Worlders! But at weekends we have been flying a squad War and fly at 10:30pm CET which means we can all fly at a reasonable time, together. Pye

My apologies to Pye and any other pilots who put the time aside to lend a hand this Sat and Sun afternoon to help me - a newbie. I'd been quite ill since Tuesday night (the flu crud I guess) and it didn't let go till Saturday afternoon. Was offline till now. I'll be there next Sat and if I see you Pye, that would be great and if not I surely wouldn't blame ya.IP: Logged |

I missed the newbie game. Somehow I got disconnected and before I got back on the newbie session must have been over. Flew a couple of other missions though. Great fun online even if I did stink up the place. Apologies to my squadron mates. So when is the next newbie session? IP: Logged |

I think this "newbie hour" is a great idea. I'm no veteran( unless you count getting shot down!!!) but more than ready to assist. This Sun (4 feb) was great, about 4-6 newbies and everyone was helping out the novices. this will only increase the size of the online crowd, thru renewed interest.IP: Logged |
