Hello and welcome mate.

Well first off lets start by getting you up to speed on the current standard.

you will need and install in this order:

Patch 1.50
Nations Version 2
Plane pack 6
WW1 Plane pack (optional)

at this point you will be able to go online (California12 server)6-8pm EST 10pm-2am EST
and you will be compatible with everyone else.

On top of these patches and downloads are tons of other good stuff, skins, terrains etc. that you can add but just remember that when playing on-line you always need to go back to the standard.

hope this helps, if you need any further advice you can e-mail me or continue to post as everyone here are great at assisting newbies.

Good luck

As to how many planes can be in an offline mission at once, it almost totally depends on your system.

I just made a mission yesterday with 20 Zero's, 14 Corsairs, and 6 Hellcats. It slowed down to the low teens FR wise when the action got heavy, but it was fun to see all those planes. Still, to make that mission very playable in all instances, I brought the Zero number down to 15, the Corsairs to 8 and the Hellcats to 4.

Your mileage may vary.

The answer to your question depends on the horsepower of your computer. SDOE is more like Combat Flight Sim I than it is like European Air War in terms of numbers of planes in the air (but somewhat superior to either of them in terms of dogfighting "fun").

There is no real "limit" on how many can be up there, but if you want to have 30 bombers in formation with 20 fighters attacking and escorting, expect a pretty low frame rate unless you have at least 800 Mhz under the hood and a fairly new graphics card.

OTOH, you could probably have 20 or so fighters in the air simultaneously without much problem (the bombers are more complex models, and tax the frame rate more).

The limit online is 16 I think.

The online limit is a practical one and isn't a hard coded limit. Experiments were done as high as 30, lag and fps make it impractical.

Online is best with less than 12 planes in the mission (at least for me anyway).

For online play you don't have to remove skins and terrains from your installation. They don't affect compatibility other than if you try to host a mission with a non-standard terrain - well then some people end up in a terrainless space.

There are some other good addons to help - check the downloads section for Chameleon, SDOE Beeper, SDOE Control, FS Ground Crew and a few others.

Spin,

Was a test done with users if all were connected using DSl or cable?

Does anyone know if the limit is due to server load or user connections?

Spanky here...

Spin I agree that the limit for online should be more around 12, just cause of simple FPS. I guess if you could find 20 people with 1ghz voodoo 5500 machines on cable or DSL, you could have a match that might be lagless.

But because of the wide type of people flying online a 12 person match seems be be a balence, Thats the highest my machine seems to handle without staying in low FPS most of the mission.

I think mighty would be the best person to answer what the limit would be in terms of data. and that would depend on host connection and computer.

It's Alt + p. It's a toggle so Alt+p it off too! It good for explaining why a mission seems soooo sloooowwww.
