I know nothing of OpenPlane, so this request may be completely out of order, but I figured it was worth asking. The recent post about what are you running SDOE on really made me feel old hat (I'm running a 300MHz machine). I love Aladar's Barracuda, but it runs deidedly slower as soon as I zoom in close enough to see the three crew members and I remember somthing on Mace's site saying that this can slow things down. Needless to say. I haven't downloaded what seems like an excellent idea (the 2-crew Mossie and 3-crew Lanc) from his site for this reason. My question is this: Can plane makers possibly provide .SM files (if these are the files involved) for their planes (or all planes even) which remove the pilot altogether, or more realistically, leave only one crewman in planes with more than one to begin with (the Barra for instance)? It could possibly be named "xxxxxx.sm1" (for one crewman) or "xxxxxx.sm0 (for no crewman) and those who want to could just rename the desired file to their PC's capabilities. As I said, I know nothing of OpenPlane and if this is a big deal, forget I mentioned it! But if it is easy, I'll take 'em for whatever planes I can until I move up in the PC world . . .------------------ Be seeing you, 3dp Visit RAF Harkness! IP: Logged |

Thats a pretty good idea. The Barracuda slows down because of the interior, its a FR hog, so for the time being you could set the interiors LOD switch in distance to something like 9 or 15.IP: Logged |

Mace's latest Lanc update had this very idea, you can have the DM update alone or DM plus 3 crew.IP: Logged |

I think I should really appologise to those with what are now lower end PC's, as builders we're always looking for more detail, more realism, and to be honest, we just don't really consider lower spec machines. It would be a great idea to have 2 versions, 1 for high end machines and one for as yours, around 300mhz. Personaly after reading this post I'll try to make a low end version of the IL2 once the main one is finished cause I'd hate to think that people out there just can't use it cause of FR problems. That being said, I do know that with PP6 there were alot of aircraft with different installation options, for high detail and low detail cocpits etc, and hats off to the builders for doing that ~Nat~ ------------------ 7./JG3 "Naturlich" "SDOE... I've had a few goes at making a b17 for maximum framerate friendliness!Have a slight improvement for an AI only B17. No interior at all! Next step is to import the new fuse with all the interior polys removed and the unused textures stripped out. The b17 uses 72 textures.....and I'm sure that is part of the reason why you can't have many in the sky! It's sort of a side project to go with the super-dooper all singing all dancing FR eating monster! IP: Logged |

Me? I'm definetly in the SLOW PC Zone, still slugging it out on my AMD 233mhz with 64 ram & a Voodoo2 V1000. (hard to believe that I wrote the DFC on this thing, eh? ) My wife is fighting Uncle Sam for her disablity, if & when she wins, then maybe I'll be getting a new system, 'till then.... .....?hip63 [This message has been edited by hip63 (edited 01-15-2001).] IP: Logged |

Thanks for all the support! I might add that I recently almost upgraded to a 750MHz machine for about $200US by building it myself. Alas, my job is up in the air right now and every penny counts, especially with a two year old (see "Colindale" off the main 3dp Homepage from the main RAF Harkness page if you care to see him) running around!------------------ Be seeing you, 3dp Visit RAF Harkness! did much the same myself. upgrades are relatively cheap at the moment, especially in the world of AMD! Durons are cheap and good! Ram is cheap, and there are even some good GeForce 2MX cards around at sensible money. I have doubled the speed of just about everything for £300! And that included a new case! p.s. Hope you get the money Hip63! Those government suits don't wait to take the stuff off you in tax, they just don't like giving it back to the deserving! IP: Logged | |
