The first thing that struck me was

"what happened to the SDOE Gazette"

If it is dead and buried, now could be a good time to dig it up!

It's gerat to read about all the stuff going on here, but it isn't necessarily going to hook those not already interested. Jug's efforts to broaden the inetrest for SDOE are great, but there is only so much he can do. Having a place to take all the stuff, filter it, and present it to the uninitiated would be a real bonus.

The second thought was

"Snicker's press releases in the manner of a wartime newsreel worked really well! I had a crack at some too, and it is fun"

Perhaps theming it like that may work well. Sepia tinted pictures, wartime adverts etc. all adding to the period theme. After action reports from the forum, along with 'top secret' plans.

Give each Nation a page, and you could read 'Giving Jerry Hell' as the Fleet Air Arm sends it's hard pressed new squadrons the Fairy Barracuda to squash the U-boat menace in the Med....turn the page.....Amerikaner bombers suffer the wrath of the new Komet! The Fatherland strikes back with this experimental rocket weapon....

Has more of an attention grabbing effect than...Aladar has released a Fairy Barracuda and a new Beta of the Me163....

If no-one else is interested, I may just have a bash myself!

We can surely do a lot for SDOE publicity ourselves. There is always the problem that anytime one of us tries to promote the sim, others take it as if coming from a fan (which we are) and as such having little merit (which it doesn't).

SDOE is far from the sim it used to be. The PlanePacks should be considered as almost inifinitely enhancing add-ons. That's why I believe it would be a good idea if they were submitted to sim sites such as SimHQ or Dogfighter for review.

Current planepacks contain many planes that aren't finished yet, though. That's why I though that perhaps creating a `FSIC Approved PlanePack' with only 'finished' planes would be very good for promotional purposes. This pack should only contain the subset of PP planes with updated FMs and an overall polished feel to them. I believe this would create be a far better pack than some of the CFS packs that are reviewed. I believe once the engine DM is incorporated, it would be a good time for creating such a pack.

It could then be sent to sim sites for independent evaluation, with a strong hint to try playing some online missions at a busy time. I believe everyone who doesn't play SDOE regularly would be very pleasantly surprised by the review, including the reviewer him or herself.

What do you all think?

Spanky here...

K my thoughts, First off we need to get the major planes up to par, no sense sending out the plane pack to people for review with planes in it that basically suck in the finish and realism department, that will do nothing to further the game. Not that I don't love every thing we have done here, but some people won't look at it from and unbiased view, they will look for anything to critisize.

another thought is what if we get people into playing it and they try online and find that we neglected to mention the bugs? they are pretty big bugs, some people leave sdoe just cause of the damage bug.

Maybe we should put together a review pack, and or an openplane demo add on and front end.

Ya know what I mean? Get someone who knows programing to make an interface for the openplane demo, just something small like the auto dogfight program, pack up our best planes and release a self installing add on to the demo, then you just DL the demo and the add on and your up and runnning, you get to see what we can do in SDOE, then they might be temped to get SDOE and try some online.

So who is going to do the front end, I could almost do a batch file front end for it if i could remember how, and what are our top planes to put in it?

Can you use missions in the demo?

The Demo can only fly one mission at a time, by putting the demo.mis file in the media directory or something like that. Someone could easily make a tool to allow the user to select a mission- the correct .mis file could be rotated in. I made a WWI demo-pack a long while ago with a bunch of missions fo the Fokker Dr1a, Albatros Dva, and SE5a. It works good, but you had to manually move the .mis files in to use them.

Look here to find it if you are intersted: http://www.schoolmusic.com/chickencoop/openplane_wwi/oldnews.htm

The demo only allows for one mission, demo.mis if I remember correctly. That doenst mean you could have a selection menu (would need to be run before you started the ParSoft demo) to rename the current demo.mis to something else and then rename the mission you wanted to run to demo.mis. This would then fire off the ParSoft demo....

Getting back to one of tailgunners points - If you're looking for somewhere to host I'd be thrilled to use the Newsreel page at Abbeville Field. (I chose the name so as to leave the possibility to expand to a pseudo SDOE-newspaper format open) If you're interested, drop me a line: keepinga@cadvision.com and we can talk about details like page reformatting, etc.

Also as the guy behind Lord Haw Haw during SDOEwar, I'd be pleased to lend a hand in writing and doing the artwork for some of these too.

Spanky here..

The front page to www.fightersquadron.com need updated news.

Some people are coming here and checking out the page and thinking nothing is happening.
before i found message boards and forums i thought alot of communitys were dead.

Why? cause no one keeps their news pages up to date.

can we give a couple people access and and easy form to fill out to post SDOE news?

Yeah exactly SV and Snick, a front end that renames and moves mission and plane files around and then fires up the demo.
Could maybe get some differnt skins going too.

So who here is a programer? I'm willing to do some art work for the front end. Who is going to do this front end?

I can do this but Delphi would be the best tool and I would have to dig it up and reinstall it. If someone else is keen on doing this great but I can otherwise.

Don't limit it to specific planes... Rather set it up so that it reads a file of what is available and let them choose from a drop down box.... Easier to update that way....
