last night while testing Condor's DM files, I rediscovered an odity with the V5 and how it handles textures in SDOE. Playing a few missions that I had run flawlessly on my old V2 SLI rig, I noticed that I was running out last night while testing Condor's DM files, I rediscovered an oddity with the V5 and how it handles textures in SDOE. Playing a few missions that I had run flawlessly on my old V2 SLI rig, I noticed that I was running out of texture memory (blocky explosions etc). Now these were not overly complex missions (4 different types of aircraft) but the V5 with 32megs of available memory per chip was under-performing the V2 SLI with 12megs of Ram per chip. Confused? You becha! The V5 can handle CFS2 maxed out with 1024 x1024 textures but is falls over when asked by SDOE to handle textures that second generation cards eat for breakfast.------------------ Yardstick painted this IP: Logged |

Uh-oh! What video card do you recommend then for running IL2, which I assume will be even more demanding on texture memory than SDOE?Werner ------------------ Visit Abbeville Field Today! IP: Logged |

YardStick,This running out of texture memory is the same problem I get with my Voodooo 3 3000 16 meg card running under glide. Nothing has fixed this for me yet. DX8, and lastest voodoo drivers still don't help. I am forced to run using the D3D drivers instead of glide. ------------------ Condor out IP: Logged |

The V5 won't work in Glide above 800x600 anyway so I use D3D. The texture memory problems are therefore in D3D.Werner, I have had no problems in any game bar SDOE with the V5, and even these problems are only irritating rather than terminal. What is lacks in HP it makes up for in visual quality. ------------------ Yardstick painted this IP: Logged |

Yep--complained about this a long time ago after I got my Voodoo5. Had the problem with my Voodoo3 and when I upgraded my system, I was stunned to see it again with the V5. Jetlag has complained about the blocky textures online too--and is seeing them when I'm seeing them. I see them alot with B17 missions--but sometimes without B17's. Mighty-never really answered my question about it to my satisfaction--but to his credit--he did respond kindly and had some suggestions--but they didn't work. Sooo- I just accept it and go on.Running glide at 800x600 with 4xFSAA in SDOE. Wish my CFS2 would run that good on my setup. Gotta turn antialiasing off and back down to 960x720 to get it somewhat smooth. Lot's of sounds start happening and it turns into a stutter fest for me. Kinda ruins the immersion factor. Athy 800, V5, 320RAM,SBLive. AQ [This message has been edited by ArthurQ (edited 01-10-2001).] IP: Logged |

The texture corrupting problem is a driver problem... its not a problem with the card itself. I ran Glide with SDOE on my V3 AGP a while back with the v1.4 drivers and all was well. But as soon as I upgraded the drivers to 1.5 or 1.6 on the V3, textures started corrupting. The same happens with my V5 tho not as bad. The only problem is I cant run SDOE in Glide with the V5 unless I have the latest drivers installed... which means switching to an earlier driver is out of the question.P.S. CFS2 runs as smooth as a babies bottom on my V5 if I turn down the terrain complexity a wee bit and the DEM density a wee bit. I run in 800x600 just to be sure the sim will be smooth during the hottest of action. The only pauses I get (Which are few) is when a plane blows up infront of my face and I get in the smoke path. I can crank it up to 1024x768 with no problem really... Im just a bit on the conservative side so I run it in 800x600. [This message has been edited by ArgonV (edited 01-10-2001).] IP: Logged |

I get texture issues when I use more than 3 different planes.IP: Logged |

Same as Whirlwind, 4-5 different planes leads to this...RAM: 192 Mb Graphic: 32 Mb So it's definatly a bug in the code. IP: Logged |

What cards are you two using? I have no problems like this with any other game I own. Just SDOE... Its either the way the drivers are or its the way SDOE handles glide.[This message has been edited by ArgonV (edited 01-11-2001).] IP: Logged |

I'm not so sure its a glide problem really. I'm not sure if Jetlag has a Voodoo card and that's what makes me think it's something else. The reason I thing he's got a Geforce card is cause of the razzing I received one night online from some of the JG3 guys (normal treatment by them ) about my V5 card and I think Jet was one of them. Got no mercy from them about it-hehe. Great group of pilots to fly with--even if most have Geforce cards AQ IP: Logged |

Jet has a GeForce2, but not all JG3 pilots have choosen the ways of the dark side The texture memory thing is not just a Glide issue but a D3D issue as well. Personally I think it has to be the drivers. Earlier versions performed very badly in SDOE (pauses every second) but the more recent ones are fast and work nicely in D3D. The issue for me is that missions I made using a V2 SLI rig, now run out of texture memory on a card having 2.5 times more video ram. BTW: For anyone in the UK GAME (Canary Wharf branch at least) are now offering the V5500 for £99.99, down from £249 (admittedly a crazy price) only 2 weeks ago. I just did a seach on-line and the best UK price listed is still in the £150 range. This undercuts a GeForce MX by about £30 and has to be worth considering for anyone in the market for a new card. ------------------ Yardstick painted this [This message has been edited by Yardstick (edited 01-11-2001).] IP: Logged |
