Hey Guys,
I was just reading over some this controversy over the JU-88 DN & that got me to thinking about a german plane that I believe they called the "Condor". I don't know it's designation numbers but it was a 4 engine bomber that was used in maritime operations against allied shipping.

While my first wish in german bombers is the HE-111, I wouldn't mind seeing a Condor Bomber in the skies over SDOE. I want to write a campaign based on the Battle of the North Atlantic & it would be nice to have the plane to use...To be honest I was even thinking of using the Ju-88 DN as substitute.

Anybody know anything about the condor?

The Focke-Wulf FW.400 Condor.

Churchill called it The Scourge of the Atlantic, as I recall. I always wondered why the Germans didn't make more and outfit them for strategic bombing, but I guess they were too preoccupied with their impractical superweapons.

I found some information at www.unsereluftwaffe.de (german)

This was a Condor 200, and it was a redesigned passenger aircraft, with low self defence systems.

I also ercall they had a reputation for fragility! As a conversion from an airliner, in full war load with a LOT of fuel, they were pushing things. As war progressed, they got a little over-stretched!

They are, however, very pretty planes!

Maybe someone will build one someday?

It was a 4 engine reconnaissance / bomber developed from a passenger plane. It was used to shadow convoys and provide location and heading info to Doenitz's U-boat command. This was the capacity that Churchill called it the scourge for. It could also carry a normal bobmb load of 3,300 lbs and a max bomb load of 11,800 lbs.

They were also used to attack convoys- mostly on the Murmansk run, although they also attacked convoys in the Atlantic. Their range was 2,200 miles or 9.5 hours in the air.

MpM or someone just did a 1/48th scale kit of that one!

The rear fuse on quite a good lot of them broke because of the long stretch between the wheels. The deHavilland Dh.91 Albatross airliner also had a similiar problem.

Just another little tid-bit. I recently read or heard that another problem with the FW200 was that being a passenger aircraft conversion, alot of its fuel lines and critical systems were run on the underside of the plane making them extemely vulnrable to ground fire. Any Damage Model would have to take this into account.

This aircraft would be the natural adversary for the CAM-launched Sea-Hurri.
