Spanky here...

K guys, If MH is leaving inertia and so might mighty. What is happening with SDOE.

We know that MH wanted to do further work on SDOE and possibly roll in some of the RC sim code improvments. And we knew that an SDOE 2 under a different name was also a possibility.

Now everything is up in the air.

What I want to know is who owns the rights to SDOE now. What company do we have to beg for improvments and a #2? Or beg to release the code opensource.

Since we can't bug MH anymore

Really guys I REALLY like this game and love its open system. I REALLY want to see another one come out. So what do we have to do to get that to happen.

Another thought is that if intertia and the rest of the companies that seem to be involved with SDOE arn't willing to give away the source or make a patch or make a #2, is to:

A, Jump on over and help out and encourage the guys making stormbird. (which we should be doing anyways)

B, Somehow set up something and buy the rights to use openplane in our own sim. (I know dreaming but why not)

You guys have to admit that with the limits of SDOE right now and the thought of no patch nore an SDOE 2 on the horizon, SDOE looks alot less intersting.

I'm not saying lets jump ship(not that theres many to jump to), I'm just asking as a community what should we do next?

I gotta say this latest news along with all the guys taking breaks really has me worried.

Let's not forget that their are supposedly a select few here who have been exposed to the SOS...there is a section on the Forum for this...call me hopelessly optimistic-- but there may be a small tiny chance that MH set that up for a reason. Let's not give up hope yet...but then again- if we were that paranoid, SDOE would never have lived as long as it has.

Hello Spanky,
I agree with you, we probably all would like to see a new version of SDOE with new features (moving ground objects, landing on water, dynamic campaigns...).
I wished we knew what Inertia and Activision plan to do with the code and the license. I think there's a good case for a new game/version and if it's financially hopeless for an editor (MS-CFS the only profitable product out there ?) why not follow the Linux Way ?
Anyway any info / idea from the planes, campaigns and terrains builders interesting here because they hold the future of the game in their hands if Inertia does not go forward with the Openplane system.
Cheers
Sailor

Spanky I agree that it appears many of our hopes have been dashed, but so long as there are people still using this sim, I'll be around to add stuff to it. Heck, I might even learn OpenPlane.

A thought, RCsim in its released form will introduce 1000,s of new open plane users (just look at the no of demo downloads from one site of many) who will be looking to design new planes and terrains for RCsim. I guess they are likely to end up here asking for advice etc etc. With their inclusion I would hope that we would then go from strength to strength as RC plane builders are by default into model making and there is a strong Scale reproduction element who are especially into WW1 and WW2 aircraft.
As anyone tried puting one of the current planes into RCsim to see what happens, as I can see it RCsim is missing Missions, network, Squadrons, missions editor but with help from our RCsim followers these may be added.

And of course there is Stormbirds !!!!

Taking a break is not the end of the world guys...

Well, in all likelyhood SDOE WONT get any more patches. Next step? Continue what we are doing here (Making planes/ground units/water units/Nations and terrain) and support Stormbirds.

My 2 cents worth.

P.S. If by some mystical act of God/The Saints/or the Prophets, SDOE DOES get a patch, I would be jumping for joy as the life of this sim would increase by another 2 years.

I wonder if MH could release the best (latest?) patch without all the diagnostic code so we can at least get a clean (smaller and faster) version?

Now may be the time to start talking to the makers of Stormbirds, since they have purchased the Openplane source for use in that sim.

To me, it sounds like the best chance of continuing Openplane for now.

Well, you guys should be reading plan file of MH and Mighty more carefully. These guys are masters! One of them let it out that they are trying to get SDOE to compile at home. Now, I don't know any details at all, but if you look at the date that was his last day, and the date that he began working on the code at home, that should give you at least a little hint.

I feel like the Matt Drudge of SDOE.

No promises, but I'm trying to get the code to compile right now, in the hopes of getting a more stable patch working. What I'm not sure of is the logistic and legal details of packaging it up and releasing it.

Mighty, the patch could just "leak" into the community by accident at no ones fault. Some "evil hacker" could of got ahold of it and then passed it around for all to take advantage of...

Well whoever owns the OP code would be well-served to allow a patch to SDOE, but we're talking about a patch to an Activision-owned product, right? Why would they not allow you to continue making "unsupported" patches along the same vein as Michael?

That's great news Mighty! Go mighty go mighty ooohwoooh ooohwoooh!

You know, you should just follow the old MS QA standard of "if it compiles, ship it!" Hell, knock the compiler strictness down a notch or two if that's what it takes. After all, what's a semicolon or two between friends?

Spanky here...

Great stuff guys, but the question still remains. What is happening?

Who do We talk to to find out EXACTLY what the chances are about a patch, and the future of SDOE and an SDOE 2 and the future of this website?

Heck I'm suprised that the servers are still running for this game.

Spanky makes a good point, one of the worst things that could happen to SDOE is to take away cali12.

MH? Mighty?

I would suggest that you start with webmaster@udgames.com for general site questions.

The key person has always been Ron Dimant (the same as mentioned on udgames.com) and it'll be up to him as to what happens to the site and product.

As far as Activenet servers go, I haven't heard any word on them in a *long* time. I've just fired off an email to my contact at Activision to see if anything new has happened. I'll let you know what I hear.
