What this means for my participation in the community as a programmer on OpenPlane is still unknown. I don't know what my free time will be like at my new place, so I can't yet commit to anything other than fellow tinkerer and supplier of information.

http://www.dragonseye.com/ When I first read this I had a sinking feeling like I just lost a good friend. Then realized we can still follow Michaels work too As for us. I truely feel that we were on the edge of greatness. After seeing the RC Sim Demo I thought that the next version of SDOE would gain a lot of respect from the air sim community. Now that is uncertain. Michael, I wish you good luck, and hope you find only good fortune. Please keep us posted with your future projects. I will try to follow your progress at your site plan. Thank you... You have no idea how much I have enjoyed your work. I also wish Mighty and Chad the best of luck, I hope that all things will work out in the most positive of ways. IP: Logged |

Thanks for the kind words.I still plan on hanging around here. I just won't be hanging around as an "author" but rather as a fellow tinkerer. Though I'm leaving Parsoft/Inertia/UD, I'd still like to see the community and engine grow and succeed.

Michael I'm so glad you posted! As one who has followed this sim since day one and a little before, I have to say I'm saddened to hear that you're moving on, but I congratulate you and all the Inertia team on the RC Sim.Best of luck with your new position! Best of luck with your future endeavours MH, I was always impressed with how you never forgot about the community, even when you were very busy with your own projects. Obviously our wildest dreams for SDOE won't be realized, but that's not to say that a future sim won't take that next step. Like Aladar I'm a bit lost on the Dogfight vs. Fighter Squadron bit, but if you are working on another WWII sim based on the same technology as SDOE, please look at making vehicles and even ships work - wwii combined ops would add so much to the game. Even if it ships with planes only, making it easier for that community to repeat the work of guys like Nat and Archy would draw more people to the game later on. I know I emailed you about a related matter recently, but I just wanted to make the point again in case I don't have another opportunity.Best of luck, I hope your next project is something you really enjoy. What a truely sad day this is. I'm happy for you Michael in that you are moving on, which each of us must do now and then, grasping new opportunities that come up. But I feel I've been your friend since beta testing the A-10 Cuba! patch back in early 1996 with you and just want you to know you'll be greatly missed around here. I do hope you can squeak in some SDOE time now and then. Maybe to help patch it more, or add a new feature or two. I have to give you a huge thanks for all your hard work with Parsoft and Inertia. SDOE has brought more fun and happiness to my life than anything else in the PC game market. But whatever the case, best of luck to you and Susan and your Dragons, whereever this new job takes you. And of course as Raider said, to Mighty and Chad. I hope they'll be fine also without you. Change IS good, but I'm still sad. Well, good luck with the new company/project. I can easily imagine how burned out on flight sims you must be by now :-) Too bad we won't get that patch, but I guess the guys who are still around have gotten used to the idea. SDOE was just a little short of greatness in the flightsim community... I hope the next project learns from its mistakes and really IS great. Out of curiousity, is anybody still behind Inertia/OpenPlane, or is it disbanded and every man for himself at this point?charm IP: Logged |

Aladar: The bit you read about Dogfight II is a bit old. It predates RC Simulator.I've heard that UD is considering another flight sim but you should write to them and ask. I won't see it even begin, so I can't comment on what the ultimate plans might be. I'd suggest starting with webmaster@udgames.com and see where that leads. Mighty's contract is up for the moment, but he may be brought back for the next project. Chad is the only one left from the FS team. Pete: I know what you mean. We've been working together informally for quite some time. While I don't know what UD/Inertia will do in the near or long term, I'm not dying (I hope), so I'll still be hanging out here and participating as another "user". Charm: There's a certain amount of burn-out to be sure although I'd still like to see RC Sim and the engine through to the fullness of its potential. Unfortunately, it was time to move on to another company. I'll still be involved in flight, but in a more whimsical way for the next year (I'll say more on Monday).

Just to corroborate Michael, my contract is up. That decision was made before Michael tendered his resignation. There's a chance that Ron might want me back for the next project, but I don't like speculating about that sort of thing in public. Ron will be out of the office all next week at MacWorld, so that decision is on hold for the time being.IP: Logged |

If something should happen to this forum, FSH can take over has center spot and i can host the forum. I could probably get the whole forum from the site and just put it on the hangar if needed.. Well, I can't say too much about what I'm doing yet, but I can say where I'm going.I'm headed over to Paradigm Entertainment ( www.pe-i.com ) where I'll be helping out on a console game due out the first Q of 2002. Given that it's a console title, it'll be more of a flight "game" than a flight "sim", but once it goes public, you'll understand why that's a good thing. IP: Logged |

Actually there are a number of projects going on over there which aren't mentioned on the web site.I don't yet know what I can say and what I can't, but I know I can say that: o The project I'll be working on isn't based on OpenPlane or any similar tech. o It's not a hard-core flight sim product. o Not in a million years will you guess the product based on what you find at the Paradigm web site.

Wanna know how far back I go?I'm a veteran of the old Parsoft message board on AOL (screen name Kjetil), when we were all waiting ages and ages for A-10 Attack! to come out for the Mac. I remember when the demo came out I spent weeks happily flying around that little island trying to sucker those two MiG-29s into chasing me out over the aircraft carrier so I could watch them get pounded by AAA. I remember Art Day and Howdy and SLKAssoc - man, that was the most interesting and entertaining forum I ever participated in. I also remember the neighboring GraphSim forum where all the F/A-18 Hornet junkies were, and how none of them seemed to get it about why A-10 was king. The Parsoft line of sims were magic. Other teams went around spouting off about their accuracy, but none of them could capture the convincing sensation of reality in A-10 and its descendants. When you moved the stick you didn't get a calculation that made the plane move a certain way, you got an impulse that moved an aileron or an elevator that changed the airflow over the control surfaces and forced a change in the orientation of the plane. Real. A work of art. I'm sorry to see things dissolve once and for all, even if you guys did have ambitions bigger than you capital and labor pool. Maybe somebody competant will come along and continue the tradition. Remember the VBE (Virtual Battlefield Environment) concept? Let's bring that back. Oh well. Nothing lasts forever. IP: Logged |
