TG,
Don't know if this will help-but when i put together my current system back in the summer-- I researched a lot of the potential probs I might encounter with the specific hardware I was purchasing. The SB Live was one of them and just in case this might help---here is what I found (although I don't remember if I had these problems or not--although I had many other small ones that my research paid off for me).Posted on one of those troubleshooting forums--(can't remember which):

Subject : FIX FOR ALL GAMEPORT SUFFERS UPDATED
AFTER U HAVE THE ONBOARD AUDIO ON BE SURE TO USE THE GAMEPORT ON THE MOTHERBOARD NOT THE SBLIVE ONE OR UR SOUNDCARD ADDONS USE THE INTERGRATED GAMEPORT THIS SHOULD LAY THIS PROBLEM TO REST IF U HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT THIS AND NEED HELP POST UR REQUEST TO MY EMAIL IF UR STILL HAVIN PROBLEMS johnsongerry@home.com i will try and help u as much as i can i have spent a great deal of time on my gameport problem for several days so i have a great deal of knowledge of this new asus motherboard bios must have onboard codec on even if ur using a sblive leave the jumper on motherboard to on for the onboard sound in device manager have two game ports enabled try both
Hey it's me again...the same chris as in the last messsage. And I have solved my problem.!!!!!!!! I found some advice about getting the 2 gameports working elsewhere in these messageboards, but in my case it still didn't get the joystick running... there is an extra step needed.
The steps I took were as follows:-
Go to control panel/system/device manager and go to the conflicting gameport (probably the via).Turn off the automatic setting and manually set the I/o to the conflicting I/O 0200-0207, it should take it. Click OK and reboot to check that all is OK.You should now have 2 gameports with the same I/O and no conflicts.( thanks to whoever it was who supplied that info !!!)
If your joystick is still not working correctly, reboot and go into the bios setup, onboard peripheral resource control, enable the onboard legacy audio support, and enable the MPU401 function.Exit and save and voila !!!! Hope this works for you guys......I know how frustrating this can be ......see ya ChrisB4258@aol.com
Next question:
Just a few days ago my friend bought a new computer, custom made and all, but without any OS installed on it (thus not really set up).
First off, i'll tell you what he has: a p3 700mhz, 128mb ram (pc133 i believe), an asus motherboard, an asus v3800 TNT2, some nobrand 56k modem, a 20gb 7200rpm harddrive, and of course... a >>>SoundBlaster Live! Value.
So anyhow I offered to install his OS (windows 98 in this case) for him. Everything went well, a few problems here a few problems there but we got it all fixed, EXCEPT: The bloody sound card.
First of all, from the start, there hadn't been any sound at all. Windows DID detect something, a "Voice something Modem Adapter" if i remember right, or something like that. It could be found in Control Panel>System>Sound, video, and game controllers.
I then proceeded to install the drivers from the cd that came with it (newer drivers and live!ware 3.0 on a cd i had burned for him, ready at hand).
They installed fine, actually, but after a few reboots... still no sound (and its not the speakers, i know that for a fact).
So after a few uninstall/reinstall tries, i decided to try to install the newer drivers and liveware 3 hoping it might fix the problem.
I couldn't even get to install them! I got a prompt saying that it hadn't detected a SoundBlaster Live! installed.. (or present, detected, whatever).
I tried thing after thing, no give, hours and hours passed. Anyhow that's about where i'm at now, although one thing i DID notice is that theres no little speaker in the task bar, bottom right ( <) ) looks like that usually.
Oh and, when i tried to run a sound, it would just say that the device was busy or not correctly configured (using winamp) and when i went into Control Panel>Sounds, i couldnt play the little play button, it was grayed-out.
Possible solutions: Ive read around a bit on the internet, before posting here, about how some people have had trouble with theyre sblive value's after a clean install of windows 95/98 (as in with the card while it installed). Most people suffered lockups or crashes, but i did NOT experience any of those!
Help! im definately out of ideas, if i dont find an answer in a few days were going to have to bring it to the shop, and i doubt theyd have the solution..
Thanks!
Nick.
Another post I copied:
you should be fixed by changing the pci slot like everyone recommended. according to tech help ive received in the past there is a difference in the pci slots. using 1-3 is the optimal to have. they actually recommend the first pci slot be used for a sound card. not gonna go into why it just is
I have to agree with everyone else. You most likely have an IRQ conflict. Fix it by either switching slots(PCI) or by adjusting your IRQ settings in your bios(often you can see what PCI slots are sharing IRQs, and depending on your board there will be options to change the IRQs on those slots). If you switch slots make sure that you remove the "device" from your system configuration to before changing and rebooting to prevent furture conflicts.
I just dealt with a similar problem to this 3 weeks ago and found for my setup only PCI slot 1 would work.
You might have double drivers installed on his system. Try removing them first, you should'nt have to edit the registry but you must uninstall the old software with Windows add remove programs or the creative version that shoud be in the Programs Folder->Creaative. If it locking up real bad, do it through safe mode.
Go to the BIOS and under Plug and Play (Config, options), it should give the you option to set the IRQs manually per slot, slot 1 is nearest to the AGP slot and they will share most of the time. I like to use 10, 9, 11, 10, 9 for 5 slots or add 11 for 6 slots. Change this combination until there are no conficts. (I don't think this is your problem though)
YOU MUST UNINSTALL *ALL* drivers from previous install attemps. Do this in safe mode if you have to. DO NOT INSATLL this card when Windows first boots up. The modem thing you asked about earlier is sound card's support for the the modem. NEVER USE BURNT CDs to install drivers (most burners will not copy Wav. and Data correctly and some of the Wav files are needed). Use the LiveWare 3.0 drivers and Never stop the install for any reason. If the install stalls, only hit the Escape Key *Esc* twice and wait, it will start up and again on it's own. This is a large install and it sometimes takes 5 min are longer, please wait for it to finish and never rush it!
Hope that helps, Donnie!

I know it may be nothing to do with this--but if there is something in here that might help--then it may be worth wading through this mess.
Also-someone else in this community is having some problems with their SB card and a friend sent them to this link www.tweak3d.net/tweak/sound/
Good luck. Stole their link
