Picture the scene, at the Tailgunner household on Christmas moring...open the pressies....a new motherboard, a new Duron 700, a new case, a soundblaster Live Player soundcard...woo hoo!

Bolt it all together, slot in all the stuff, clip on a huge CPU fan just to make sure, read lots of lovely stuff about how my Mobo supports overclocking...switch on...Monitor stays dead as a dodo.

Open her up, check everything, still dead!

Aaaaaarrrggh

Check graphics card again....o.k. Remove and re-fit....still nothing.

Read small print on graphics card ( my old voodoo2 ) and it says under systems requirements...'installed VGA card'

What! My old mobo had on-board graphics, so all worked fine. New one hasn't.

No money left to buy a card with, so that was that until new year. My sister has liberated an old Rage AGP card from her work, so I will try that, but I won't have it until new years eve! Hope this cures the problem! I haven't even got as far as the BIOS yet!

So, if anyone has mailed me on my other e-mail address, I can't get at it! Also, had to go back to work to get access to the Internet. Work PC's are NT4 which won't support DirectX, so no OPS!

Most annoying thing? Have ironed out most of the bugs in the B17 DM phase 1, just needed to sort the wing damage. Also had a 109 DM model based on Nat's stuff with multiple cylinders and radiators etc. It was working nicely, and I was going to send it to a few people to test out. Thought, no, I'll wait till after Christmas...Damn!

still, thats life!

Looking on the bright side, I got a new tie....and very drunk...

Hope you have it saved well. It's always good to send buddies copies as work progresses that way you will have backups.

When I did all my 30's air racers for FS98 I would send my friends copies and when my pc went down and I lost it all I just retreived the copies I had sent out.

Now I have a cd burner and I put new stuff on cd but still send out my planes.

Welcome to the club, WT.

That's essentially what happened to me after getting all the parts for my new comp together. I had a feeling that the chances of something going wrong were great, but I still hoped for the best situation. I replaced the mobo and cpu and the rest is history.

Oh well... You get mad, you get over it.

(thenk get drunk)

I agree Hawk.... After losing the Alpha PBY, every time I have a major change to the PBY I send it to several members of the team. Hopefully we will never need to do a rebuild again, but if we do, it won't be from ground zero. Sorry to hear this wt.... I suspect there was at least one email from me to you....

ROFLMAO!

Ummm guys...

Ever heard of "floppy disks"?

[Zur snickers...]

I've made a habit of making a safe copy everything I modify prior to doing so... (I cannot count the number of time that baby saved my ass and my sanity)

I am flattered Zur... ".....Zur snickers..." now you know how I got my handle ... only it was the noise co-workers who were gamers when I got enthusiastic about SDOE....
Don't care about your floppy idea though. I kept the PBY alpha backups on a zip disk. My drive died at the same time I did a rebuild on the system. Consequently, I lost the data. Even removeable media can die (this includes floppies). The best way is to back it up on floppies AND to send copies out.... Never say never....

Spanky here...

I don't understand, what is the problem with his hard drive?

He said it wouldn't boot till he got another vid card. SO???? What does that have to do with his hard drive?

What ya should do is borrow another hard drive then format that and install win98, slap your onther drive in as a slave and pop all your good stuff onto the borrowed hard drive. then swap drives again and reinstall win98 onto that and swap back.

I really don't see the problem here.

BTW I have like 2 ati vga cards lying around (thats all they are good for ya know) too bad we don't live closer together.

Spanky, the problem is he doesn't had a video card, so it doesn't matter at all about the Hard Drive, the Voodoo2 is a 3D accelerator card, previously he had onboard graphics and the V2 for 3D, now he has the new M/B there's no onboard graphics, so he has no display, all he needs is a cheap graphics card to connect the V2 to and it will be fine.

Dunno where this idea of HD problems came from.. lol, he didn't even say there was a problem with it

Hard drives are fine and dandy! Nothing lost, except a little of my patience!

New rig is almost running....Soundblaster Live won't play at te moment, but hey! A silent PC....

Solved my graphic problem tho....3D prophet 2 MX, with dual display video....

Had to remove the Voodoo, since it was conflicting nastily with the other card. It should be possible to get it back sometime, else I'll just have to get used to D3D. hmmmm

Still, get better FR's now, even on the highest res my monitor can stand. Just as well really!

backups are always kept! I use free web-space to back up all my projects. It's easier when you are out and about to pick the stuff up!

TG,
Don't know if this will help-but when i put together my current system back in the summer-- I researched a lot of the potential probs I might encounter with the specific hardware I was purchasing. The SB Live was one of them and just in case this might help---here is what I found (although I don't remember if I had these problems or not--although I had many other small ones that my research paid off for me).

Posted on one of those troubleshooting forums--(can't remember which):

Subject : FIX FOR ALL GAMEPORT SUFFERS UPDATED
AFTER U HAVE THE ONBOARD AUDIO ON BE SURE TO USE THE GAMEPORT ON THE MOTHERBOARD NOT THE SBLIVE ONE OR UR SOUNDCARD ADDONS USE THE INTERGRATED GAMEPORT THIS SHOULD LAY THIS PROBLEM TO REST IF U HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT THIS AND NEED HELP POST UR REQUEST TO MY EMAIL IF UR STILL HAVIN PROBLEMS johnsongerry@home.com i will try and help u as much as i can i have spent a great deal of time on my gameport problem for several days so i have a great deal of knowledge of this new asus motherboard bios must have onboard codec on even if ur using a sblive leave the jumper on motherboard to on for the onboard sound in device manager have two game ports enabled try both

Hey it's me again...the same chris as in the last messsage. And I have solved my problem.!!!!!!!! I found some advice about getting the 2 gameports working elsewhere in these messageboards, but in my case it still didn't get the joystick running... there is an extra step needed.
The steps I took were as follows:-
Go to control panel/system/device manager and go to the conflicting gameport (probably the via).Turn off the automatic setting and manually set the I/o to the conflicting I/O 0200-0207, it should take it. Click OK and reboot to check that all is OK.You should now have 2 gameports with the same I/O and no conflicts.( thanks to whoever it was who supplied that info !!!)
If your joystick is still not working correctly, reboot and go into the bios setup, onboard peripheral resource control, enable the onboard legacy audio support, and enable the MPU401 function.Exit and save and voila !!!! Hope this works for you guys......I know how frustrating this can be ......see ya ChrisB4258@aol.com
Next question:
Just a few days ago my friend bought a new computer, custom made and all, but without any OS installed on it (thus not really set up).
First off, i'll tell you what he has: a p3 700mhz, 128mb ram (pc133 i believe), an asus motherboard, an asus v3800 TNT2, some nobrand 56k modem, a 20gb 7200rpm harddrive, and of course... a >>>SoundBlaster Live! Value.
So anyhow I offered to install his OS (windows 98 in this case) for him. Everything went well, a few problems here a few problems there but we got it all fixed, EXCEPT: The bloody sound card.

First of all, from the start, there hadn't been any sound at all. Windows DID detect something, a "Voice something Modem Adapter" if i remember right, or something like that. It could be found in Control Panel>System>Sound, video, and game controllers.

I then proceeded to install the drivers from the cd that came with it (newer drivers and live!ware 3.0 on a cd i had burned for him, ready at hand).
They installed fine, actually, but after a few reboots... still no sound (and its not the speakers, i know that for a fact).
So after a few uninstall/reinstall tries, i decided to try to install the newer drivers and liveware 3 hoping it might fix the problem.
I couldn't even get to install them! I got a prompt saying that it hadn't detected a SoundBlaster Live! installed.. (or present, detected, whatever).

I tried thing after thing, no give, hours and hours passed. Anyhow that's about where i'm at now, although one thing i DID notice is that theres no little speaker in the task bar, bottom right ( <) ) looks like that usually.
Oh and, when i tried to run a sound, it would just say that the device was busy or not correctly configured (using winamp) and when i went into Control Panel>Sounds, i couldnt play the little play button, it was grayed-out.

Possible solutions: Ive read around a bit on the internet, before posting here, about how some people have had trouble with theyre sblive value's after a clean install of windows 95/98 (as in with the card while it installed). Most people suffered lockups or crashes, but i did NOT experience any of those!

Help! im definately out of ideas, if i dont find an answer in a few days were going to have to bring it to the shop, and i doubt theyd have the solution..

Thanks!
Nick.

Another post I copied:

you should be fixed by changing the pci slot like everyone recommended. according to tech help ive received in the past there is a difference in the pci slots. using 1-3 is the optimal to have. they actually recommend the first pci slot be used for a sound card. not gonna go into why it just is

I have to agree with everyone else. You most likely have an IRQ conflict. Fix it by either switching slots(PCI) or by adjusting your IRQ settings in your bios(often you can see what PCI slots are sharing IRQs, and depending on your board there will be options to change the IRQs on those slots). If you switch slots make sure that you remove the "device" from your system configuration to before changing and rebooting to prevent furture conflicts.
I just dealt with a similar problem to this 3 weeks ago and found for my setup only PCI slot 1 would work.

You might have double drivers installed on his system. Try removing them first, you should'nt have to edit the registry but you must uninstall the old software with Windows add remove programs or the creative version that shoud be in the Programs Folder->Creaative. If it locking up real bad, do it through safe mode.
Go to the BIOS and under Plug and Play (Config, options), it should give the you option to set the IRQs manually per slot, slot 1 is nearest to the AGP slot and they will share most of the time. I like to use 10, 9, 11, 10, 9 for 5 slots or add 11 for 6 slots. Change this combination until there are no conficts. (I don't think this is your problem though)

YOU MUST UNINSTALL *ALL* drivers from previous install attemps. Do this in safe mode if you have to. DO NOT INSATLL this card when Windows first boots up. The modem thing you asked about earlier is sound card's support for the the modem. NEVER USE BURNT CDs to install drivers (most burners will not copy Wav. and Data correctly and some of the Wav files are needed). Use the LiveWare 3.0 drivers and Never stop the install for any reason. If the install stalls, only hit the Escape Key *Esc* twice and wait, it will start up and again on it's own. This is a large install and it sometimes takes 5 min are longer, please wait for it to finish and never rush it!

Hope that helps, Donnie!

AQ typing again:
I know it may be nothing to do with this--but if there is something in here that might help--then it may be worth wading through this mess.

Also-someone else in this community is having some problems with their SB card and a friend sent them to this link www.tweak3d.net/tweak/sound/
Good luck. Stole their link

When I setup my A7M mobo with SBlive the following info was on the Asus website.

Set irq 5 to 'reserve for Legacy device'

under the heading PCI/PNP IRQ Recourse Exclusion

Also it said to use the latest drivers, I did all this under my first setup so I have never run without this setup to know if thats your problem but my sblive works fine.

WOW!

Thanks for the tips!

Cracked it now I think! The mobo set itself up as a default with sound on board. My mobo is the version without the sound built in! It must have been ignoring the presence of the soundblaster!

I also removed all traces of sound drivers from the HD. There was evidently still some stuff left over as I got an unknown device popping up. Had to do the same with the voodoo 2 to get the new graphics card to work too! It was crashing on startup until I did! Removed all trace and then started from scratch!

Still, got sound out of her last night!

ahhhhh 45+ fps on 800 x 600 ( 20's before ) and still got good FR's on higher res!

downer is I now know why glide was preferred to D3D.....still, you can't have everything!

p.s. Only got sound from one speaker....panicked....then found the wire had fallen out....

p.p.s.

Anyone who doesn't realise how long a week is, try spending more money than you can afford to improve your p.c. and then just sit and look at the bits for 6 days....
