The Sea Mosquito is the last in a trilogy of land based RAF aircraft converted for carrier operations by the Royal Navy. (the others being the Sea Spitfire and Sea Hurricane) However being a heavy twin engine torpedo bomber, the Sea Mosquito needed RATO (rocket assisted take off) packs to launch from the deck and landing the 'mossie' back on the carrier was also a challenge. Features of the SDOE Sea Mosquito include:

*Pilot actuated RATO packs
*Two animated crew (pilot's head moves with the stick and the navigator's head tracks enemy targets)
*Updated damage model; for example if an engine suffers significant damage, the landing gear inside the engine cowling will not lower, making landing interesting.
*Load out includes a working torpedo (courtesy of ArgonV) as well as rockets and bombs
*Engine exhaust pipes, moving control stick, radio mast and antenna wires
*Tail hook, folding wings, air to surface radome and display box in cockpit
*Radiator grills and engine air scoops added via skin
*Aircraft can be flown from the navigator's position

Hope to release the 'beta' in time for Christmas and screen shots can be seen at:

Sea Mossies!

Funny thign, but I was reading about them the other day! Had real problems with Carrier ops! It wasn't until after the war that the RN got deliveries of Mossies that had folding wings...

They used the tail arrester gear of a Barracuda, oddly enough, so perhaps you could borrow that from Aladar!

They tried a few carrier landings / takeoffs, but never operated them from carriers in combat during the war. You had to line up well off the centre line to miss the superstructure. Try doing that on a pitching, rolling deck...

Post war, proper sea mossies were built, complete with folding wings and a thimble ray-dome on the nose. Later, they built the worlds first Ugly Mossie! They converted sea mossies for target towing, putting an ugly glazed cupola on the nose, with a second one aft of the main cockpit. I wish I could post the picture.....you'd see what I mean!

Still, they were the only twin engined planes used on carriers by the Brits. Don't think the US ever did either ( apart from Doolittle & his B25's )

They could take off unladen without the RATO, but as soon as you put a combat load on, you needed help to get airborne.

p.s. Any chance of putting some of your upgrades into the stock Mossie. Reading down the list of things you have done, most are not 'Sea' specific, and would really improve the old Mossie! Co-pilot fly the plane, damage modelling, exhaust pipes, radio mast, control stick etc. etc. etc.

You could bundle them in a pack....Please!

p.p.s. Any chance of a picture to whet our appetites!

wakeup tailgunner, after the release of the Sea Mosquito, I'll produce a non naval version with the outlined features, as I did with the Sea Hurricane but unfortunately this will not be till the new year.

Cool Mace! I can wait!

The poor old 'boxed' planes look a little lame compared to everything else. When I get done with the B17, I'll do the Lanc too. Then, there won't be much left that shipped with the game!

I think the American's trialed the F7F Tigercat on the Midway class carriers. I am pretty sure they did this before the end of the war, although the only combat the F7F saw was flying for the Marrines as a land based fighter. It's a pretty awesome piece of kit though - even my wife thinks its sexy

The F7F wasn't ready for full carrier duties before the war was finished. They had them ready for operational service, but the gear needed beefing up, and the arrestor gear etc. needed fitting for carrier use. Trials of this were underway when the war finished. Shame really, coz it was a bloody good plane!

Sounds awesome close up.....ahh thank you Duxford!

They were still around years later, and saw action in Korea, having been outfitted as all weather / night fighters, with radar gear in a second seat aft of the cockpit.
