Posted by Mirthain in another thread:

...Second, this could allow us to make the RC glider bombs that the FW-190's and the JU-88's(?) carried. ;} Kiss Nat's ships goodbye... ;} (This is regarding being able to put a second pilot in the Mistel bomber...)

In addition to this, early tests with the PBY show that this big ungainly slow bird able to take out the Yamamoto on a fairly regular basis. (Yes the current PBY can take damage...) It has more to do with the speed of the bird (I don't think the AI tracks slow speed craft well...). It also has to do with some of the unique loadouts the PBY has.... I will be interested to hear from Argon if he can take out your ships with the two torpedoes she carried....

I didn't post this in the other thread because I didn't want to detract from that topic.....

The Yamato can be sunk in 2 direct torpedo hits. The Scharnhorst takes 5-6 direct torpedo hits as does the Ark Royal. I dont recall the Hoods torpedo count....

This is shocking.....

To see the arms race starting all over again!

Next thing you know, the PBY will be loading additional ordinance on the hardpoints to defeat the armour, then etc. etc.

Where will it all end!

on the damage side of the ships, those that are more realistic and taking more torpedo hits, you might like to know if you didn't already, that if you do enough damage to set the ship on fire it will sink, it will take a long time, but it's gonna go down.. lol The reason the ships are so hard to kill is an easy answer, and it's a reason I'm not overly keen on the flak capabilities being toned down much: One good hit on a ship will knock out all of it's guns, the explosion strength of most weapons is enough to blast across the complete ship killing everyone, so wheres the fun in knowing that aslong as you can get to the target you've won, I was giving the ships a fighting chance of kickin your ass there are a couple of things to remember though... for the impatient, you're gonna die taking on the big ships.. thinking it's cool to hit full throttle and get into the big ole ship might sound cool, but it means ofcourse that all those nasty guns are going to be pointing at you cause you're the closest target.. take it easy, there's strength in numbers, staying with the pack means you have a better chance of getting to the target

Solo in a PBY, with 4000 lbs of bombs, was able to sink the Yamamoto from about 5 miles out (by the radar screen display). Back during the war Karaya2 and I worked on ways to take out your destroyer. Could do it 9 times out of 10 without losing either of our planes....
