One of the issues in SDOE is how do you allow people do have realistic control of the plane when pulling with 30 pounds of force at 300mph could put some planes in a spin. I like how the new BoB demo handles it.. they have a "sim" setting and a "realistic" setting for stick and rudder. Sim setting reduces your stick travel so you can't easily spin the plane while realistic setting gives you historic stick travel. In realistic mode it is very twitchy with a regular pc joystick. I think I will be able to get used to it though. The link to the demo is on my site if you are looking. Its got some interesting features like rear view mirror and ability to use the mouse wheel as pitch control. TS ------------------

Salute Tailslide!"One of the issues in SDOE is how do you allow people do have realistic control of the plane when pulling with 30 pounds of force at 300mph could put some planes in a spin." Please just explain that sentence a bit more for my education please. Also what BoB does, as you describe it, is very similar to what Stickworks CTFJ 3.2 does and makes the planes very flyable for me. Thank-you for the great work on FMs you do!! Salute MW IP: Logged |

If you move the controls a large amount in a short period of time you can make one of your wings exceed the angle of attack required for a stall even if you are going relatively fast. You can see this at air shows when a pilot kicks the rudder to the side and yanks on the stick to throw their plane into a spin. The Canadian ace buzz beurling like to use this in combat: By July 11, Beurling had shot down two Bf-109s, three Macchi 202s, had a probable kill on a 109 and a few other aircraft damaged. On July 14, when flying alone(!) at 30,000 feet, Buerling attacked a group of Me-109s and Macchi 202s. During his dive he was spotted, and enemy aircraft, split its formation, let him go through, and closed after him. Starboard were Macchis, and Beurling turned toward them, trying to avoid Messerschmitts. Somebody got him anyway. He was flying for his life, using all helpful maneuvers. When being riddled with bullets directly from behind, he resorted to certain Spitfire advantage. If jumped from behind, the Spitfire, if its stick pulled too hard - 60 lb.. of torque was exerted on it (40 lb.. of shorter stick in Bf-109) - would enter a violent stall, flick over and spin. The maneuver was so quick and rough, that it proved to be an excellent escape. Another trick he often used was: "an aileron turn where you kick everything (the stick and the rudder) into corner." Aircraft flips over and drops like a rock. TS

So...this is really a maneuver, and not just me screwing up?? Ok, though, riddle me this: why, when I do something like this online in my SpitV, you STILL shoot me right outta the atmosphere? Huh? (ok, left myself wide open - will he nail me? Stay tuned...) Speaking of BoB...well...the demo doesn't like my TNT card ( hey, I LIKE my little old TNT, hehe ) and my Voodoo2 hasn't enough memory to run it ( though it does load the mission, which is more than it will do with my TNT - and yes, all drivers current ). I believe I may commence kicking and screaming.

Wow TS! Thanks for this tip. I was about ready to dump BoB for good because I was having so much trouble just getting the Spit to stop pitching up and down. With the Stick set to "Sim" (Rudder is still on realistic), the plane is MUCH more manageable. Now, I'm having a ball with BoB and will definitely buy it. There are some very cool things about this sim. The fly-by sounds are very cool. E IP: Logged | |
