What is the current state of knowledge about the 4500 and 5500 VooDoo cards and FSSDOE.

1. Will they work in Glide?
2. Will they work in resolutions higher than 640*480?
3. Will they work in all resolutions as long as I have the desktop set to 32 bit colour?

(I have been reading back through the posts, but the situation appears to change with time!)

Thanks for your thoughts.
MW

P.S. This current rash of correspondence relates to loading up Plane Pack 6.0. It is an inspiration to play this game anew!

ok desktop at 32 for some strange reason dir x 8 and latest dir x8 compliant drivers for the voodoo 4500 and it does glide at 800x600.The big difference is much better frame rate then in d3d and it doest look as phoney as d3d does. Also the voodoo 4500 agp worked in glide right out of the box with no new drivers just had to change desktop to 32 bit for some strange reason. Also the voodoo was compatible with all my games vs the geforce 2 mx which I took back to get my voodoo had many irregularities and problems with my games and also had an annoying constant flicker.Tried to fix with the various drivers out for it to no avail,so I returned it and purchased the voodoo 4500agp.

I am running a p-3 600 on a gigabyte mother board with agp, 256 pc133 ram 15 gig hd at 9400 rpm ,and an asound sound card,17 inch monitor logitech extreme 3 d joystick and a 300 watt tower.I will never go with another card unless it has a voodoo chipset as my last card was a CL banshee and it lasted me 2 years with very little headaches also. You want super d3d framerates go nvidia, but be prepared for constant new drivers to make things work. You want reliability and glide go voodoo.Notice they never compare those nvidia cards that of coarse cant do glide to a voodoo thats not in glide, for glide games the difference isnt much, and the quality better.

LONG LIVE VOODOO!!!!!!!

I have a Voodoo5 5500 and glide works fine for me, but SDOE still suffers from the glide alignment problem above 800x600 (Fixed in Michael's Betas). So i just run D3D at 1280x1028 or something like that since i like the higher res and D3D runs as fast as glide now with DX8 (well it does for me).

MW,
Love my Voodoo 5500. Glide runs fine in SDOE as long as you abide by what everyone is saying. No problems in any other games either but I mostly use D3D with 4x antialiasing in the others ( EAW,JF18,F4,EECH MigAlley). WWII Fighters I can run 2xAA since its CPU intense and unfortunately with my setup (Athlon 800, K7V, 192RAM,V5) CFS2 only runs adequately in Fastest Performance mode without AA
Overall, I really like the thing. Using DX8 and latest official Voodoo5 drivers.

Ok what about PCI voodoo 5500? Anyone using this setup? Also can I run a voodoo 5500 PCI along side my Geforce Ultra AGP? I used to run a TNT along side my Voodoo SLI setup with no probs.

Question: So, with Glide, can I use Full Screen Anti-Aliasing?

Question: Wow - I was thinking about buying a new computer of about that standard with Intel P3 800, 256M Ram, and VooDoo 3000 or 5500 and thought it would absolutely ROMP home in Combat Flight Sim 2 (and old games like WWII Fighters)! What do you need to run that game well????!!! I am starting to get depressed again.

Thanks again,
MW

(This thread bubbles to the top again

I also checked my Screen Settings and the Maximum colour depth I can set is 24 BIT. You are all talking about 32 BIT. Is this colour depth (32 bit) what I get with my new Video Card or is it dependent on the monitor? I don't want to fork out $600 for VooDoo5000 if it isn't going to run with my system and with FSSDOE.

Also any response to my older questions perhaps, please?

Mark,
Sorry--been out of town on a business trip.
Guess I didn't say that part about Glide and SDOE very clearly. Yes, I only run SDOE in Glide with 4X antialiasing and I must say it is gorgeous. EAW seems better to me with the Voodoo 5 in D3D and I must say--is just gorgeous in 4XAA. Mig Alley- I must say-- is gorgeous in 4XAA-and Mig Alley doesn't support Glide -so its only D3D. And on and on and on with all my other flight sims its the same with the exception of CFS2 which I can't seem to run smoothly in 4XAA but which runs well in Fastest Performance mode, and in WWII Fighters I have to back off to 2XAA to keep the framerates acceptable.
Well, what can I say, but that it bothers me too that I can't seem to get CFS2 to run smoothly in 4XAA-but I speak the truth on my system (which may not be true for others with similar systems). WW2 Fighters is just a CPU intense sim and it still looks great in 2XAA so I'm not really disappointed there.
Also, there may be others that are smarter than I am (no wait--there ARE others that are smarter than I am) when it comes to tweaking their computers-so-maybe they get better performance than I do.
Don't be depressed yet-- as soon as you upgrade--6 months from now is the time to get depressed when your system is once again an antique
And-oh yes- I believe that 24 bit color problem is a video card limitation, not a monitor limitation, and the Voodoo 5 does support 32 bit color although I've never been all that impressed with the difference between 16 bit and 32 bit anyway.
Hope that clears some things up.
AQ

PS- Just read in some other thread that you're running a P200 vintage computer now. If that's so--you definitely won't be disappointed with a P800 and a Voodoo5 (or GEForce) for that matter. Its a whole other ball game completely and that much of an upgrade will definitely allow you to see these sims in a whole new light. Even if you can't antialias a couple of them like you'd like.

Just got Vooodoo 5 5500 AGP in the mail today. Hooked it up when I got home - no problems so far.
Although, when I turned FSAA off (for some performance increase) and ran SDOE in Glide (with Michael's beta) I got this wierd shearing effect where the screen looked like a hall of mirrors. Downloading the latest drivers now. I'll let you know how it turns out.

I have ATI Rage drivers problem with DirectX 7 and 8, so I'm thinking of upgrading to a Voodoo card, From what you say above it seems I have 4 solutions :
Voodoo 3 3000 PCI beside my ATI Rage AGP,
Voodoo 4500 PCI beside my ATI Rage AGP,
Voodoo 4500 AGP i/o my current ATI.
Voodoo 5500 AGP i/o my current ATI.
Questions : will i be able to use FSAA with my old P2 400 - 128Mo RAM ?
The PCI solutions would let me upgrade to Geforce with a new processor in a few month while keeping Glide capabilities, but I fear it'll slow the board 2 much ?
Is a single Voodoo 4500 a viable long term (1 year ?) solution ?
Thanks to all.

Well guys, as usual, I forgot a few minor details about the Voodoo 5 and Glide and SDOE. Forgive me, I'm entering middle age and the mind is the second thing to go- as you all know.
With the V5 and SDOE, in order to run glide you really do have to be in 4xAA or 2xAA for some reason- I too get the hall of mirrors effect in fastest performance mode in glide. So-- in order for the V5 to really be worth it in my opinion, you must have a fast processor.
I'm not sure--but I think upgrading to such an expensive video card as this with a 400mhz processor is probably not worth it.
I've still got my Celeron 400 with a Voodoo 3 2000 in my daughter's room but I never experimented with it by putting in the V5 (and I'm not gonna-don't want to mess with things that are working just fine).
And Sailor, since glide only seems to work in SDOE with AA-even though I just checked to see if 2xAA worked--and it does-- I'm not sure how well the V4500 would perform in antialiasing on a 400mhz computer (since the V4500 only does 2xAA versus the V5 which does 2x and 4xAA from what I hear)--so--in other words--I don't know if it is a good long term solution (with computers there is never a "long term" anything anyway ).
And--I run SDOE in 800x600 since the higher resolutions have that weird offset thing happening (which can be straightened out by hitting Alt-or+ or Ctrl-or+ [can't remember which] until the screen is centered up). MH's beta patches fixed that I think but I don't run the beta patches.
