Spanky here...

In the vain attempt to get SDOE to run even better I'm buying a couple things this christmas for myself.

A new MB, a duron or athlon 750 or higher and a 17" monitor.

Anyone doing any upgrading this holiday season?

I'm just asking cause I noticed nealg said he was getting some ram for himself.

Similar plans here!

My Celeron 333 is ...er...slow!

New Motherboard needed , since I only have 2 PCI slots and no AGP on mine, so a new processor would make sense too.

Can't decide whether to go Duron 700 or Celeron 700. Some more RAM would be nice, and since my current sound is on-board, a decent soundcard is a must too!

So....

Dear Santa...

Please send me one soundblaster live, one MB with 3 DIM slots, at least 5 PCI and an AGP, a 700Mhz CPU and probably a new case, since my minitower is short on expansion slots and is a littel cramped!

p.s. I have been a very good boy....

Looks like you have a dilema.

k right now you have a MB you admit is kinda old and outdated and pc66 ram (i'm guessing thats what it is since your running a cel)

How much ram do you have right now?

If I was in your shoes I would definatly go for a Duron, they are mhz for mhz more powerfull then the cels in all the reviews i have read. Plus they are cheaper.

The problem with going with a duron for you is you can't use your old ram, the duron uses pc100 ram on a 200mhz FSB. Personally any ram i buy from now on will be pc133 since its only a couple bucks more.

The other problem with durons is the motherboards are usually a bit more expensive. Thats slowly changing though, and if you were going to buy a quality board anyways then it doesn't matter.

So you can buy a new board and cel chip and live with that.

Or you can go full out and buy a new board, duron and ram and get better performance. albeit for a little more cash.

One good point is the duron is cheaper so that will help offset the cost of the ram.

your going to need to upgrade to pc100 ram someday anyways so if you have the money right now then I would suggest it, I'm running it already and I'm still using a 66mhz FSB on this PII 333. You should really consider jumping right up to pc133 if the cost isn't much higher across the pond.

It also could help in the case of overclocking.

Right now the MB to get for durons is the abit or asus. They both have their pluses.

BTW i just picked up a soundblaster live, Its not bad but I don't have extra speakers hooked up to take advantage of the 3d sound, I have noticed SDOE doesn't hicup the first time i fire my guns in SDOE anymore though.

I wanted it cause I needed a new SB and figured why get a SB16 again, plus it gets me out of ISA parts.

Oh yeah I'm buying a new case this weekend. LOL

sounds like our upgrades are pretty similar.

The old beast has 64M of PC100 which I added to the 32M it came with. PC66 wasn't cheaper, so I thought what's the point, and bought PC100! Just done some price checks on Scan, the number 1 purveyor of goodies for PC's, and I can get a Duron 750, Gigabyte socket A mobo, plus a new case for under £200. A soundblaster 1024 sticks another £40, but I'll need a soundcard, since mine is currently 'on board'.

p.s.

I'll double check my RAM ! Thanks for the tip!!!

Ah yeah, That gigabyte board has onboard sound if its the same one I'm looking at here.

ALso its not the overclocker the asus and abit boards are but if your not into that the gig board is probly a good option.

You should look into more ram later on down the road, Running that kinda CPU with 64 megs of ram is just insane.

well, I got hold of a cheap hard drive, it's a seagate ST336704FC Cheetah, 36.4Gb, 10,000rpm, 5.2ms seek.. and I did get it very cheap, problem is... it has a 40 pin SCA out on it and I can't find a converter from 40pin to 68pin SCSI, now if I wanted to go the whole hog and buy the fibre channel card it's really designed for thats gonna cost around $1,500. Maybe one of you guys knows where I can get hold of a 68pin SCSI3 to 40pin SCA adaptor??

...Yeah, a 7-day all-expenses-paid trip to the north poll.

Upgrading here. AAMOF, it's on its way now (from 3 different locations). Went with AMD 1G, Abit KT-7, 128m RAM and a GeFarce2 GTS.

Would've liked to be able wait for the new line of mobos using AMD's new chipset, but I couldn't hack it any longer and besides, it usually takes them a while to get things straightened out.

Here's hoping it all comes together nicely...

X-mas, eh?
Well, the budget is a little tight this year, since I was laid off for about 2 months a month ago. However, I think the ol'lady has already got me one of those X-ports they where advertising over at Simfiles, (you know, it's one of those deallies that hook up to your joystick, headphone & mic connections on yer soundcard & re-routs them to a panel on the front of your computer for easy access, DAMN, I'm tired of having to reach around to connect controllers to my PC). Other than that, my old AMD 233mhz w/65ram & Voodoo2 will have to slug out SDOE for alittle longer (although, I hope to get one those big 1ghz+ processors loaded with all the goodies (nvidia64, 256ram, cdrw, dvd, ect, ect)after the first of the year )
I might get Crimson Skies as well (slim chance, but maybe)

Well, the only definite plans for me for Christmas are more RAM, and B17II...the RAM is ordered, just waiting to see if the sim will be out here by then. Would also like to get a GeForce 2 MX card to replace my TNT...I am stubbornly hanging on to my Voodoo 2 accelerator, hehe...but doubt I will be able to afford that by Christmas.

As to RAM...prices seem pretty good right now, for both PC 100 and PC 133. Crucial has some good web prices, and free UPS 2nd Day Air shipping until 1-2-2001; I selected them because they are a division of Micron, and I use Micron RAM now for 2 of my 3 64 Meg chips. www.crucial.com if anyone wants to check them out. I'm sure there are even better prices to be found through PriceWatch; Crucial has 64 Meg PC 100 RAM at about 40 bucks US, and 128 at 79 bucks US - standard 168 pin unbuffered non parity, non ECC, CL-2, 8ns. PC 133 RAM only a few $ more. Sorry for all that info, just tossed it in if anyone was shopping and curious.

Last I heard Biggs, the demo was unauthorized. I would hope the actual sim holds up to the mid-level machines much better. Either way-- I will buy it...I'll just have to upgrade...whether the boss likes it or not!! Sorry honey...
