So I'm sitting here too late tonight, thinking about my Desert Fox Campaign delay woes, when a stray thought hit me, what next? When I finally get my DFC out the door, What Next? Then a REALLY stray thought hit me. I'd like to think that my DF Campaign has pushed SDOE boundaries alittle & taken the game in a little different direction by incorperating ground units into the senarios. I'd like to push the boundaries again, but what? I've got an idea, but I'll need volunteers for this one. What is it you say? Well, I've been hearing about this new upstart "Crimson Skies", right? I got to thinking about the name of my site, "The Psyhcedlic Squadron" and said to myself, hmmmm
Well, I got to thinkin' about some of the more "exotic" aircraft in the game already. Like ALL the German jets, & let's not forget all those really "experimental" aircraft at the SDOE Flightline like the Bi-Wing P51 (with it's 12 50 cal mgs!)
I could write up some wild hero & villian characters & they would appear under "Squadrons" along with any "dark forces" they command. Then I could write up senario missions based around them.
The help I mentioned before would be in form some cool super hero type skins {if you have seen my BOC Me262 skin at my site, you will get the idea}, AND IF SOMEBODY [wink wink nudge nudge] Really wants be a super hero and come up with any other "extreme" aircraft they might have dreamed of one night after drinking to much, or whatever they might consider submitting...
You could consider it a fantasy game using the SDOE game engine & OPS as basis.
Anyway, it was any idea I had after staying up to late one night. [what?...i'm outta beer again?.....]
What do you think?

thanx,

How about the Battle of Hoth from The Empire Strikes Back! We already have the terrain for it, Winter in Germany. Someone could get creative and have moving AT-AT Walkers, all the various Snow-speeders, and those cool turrets that defended the rebel base.

It's a thought

I fully support the idea of getting the other mostly unused aircraft up in the air. I tried to make a few "What if the cold war went hot" missions. The problem I had was getting the jets close enough to the prop jobs to give them a chance. By the way, that Yak is really fast!

Some of these aircraft need better skins (the original P80), and some FM tweaks (see discussions regarding the Go229 etc).

Pete... THAT WOULD BE SOOOOOOO COOL!!!
I wonder how long we could play it until Lucas sent us a Cease and Desist Letter?

I cant believe you guys havent thought of this sooner! Hell Ive ben dreaming of Space: SDOE for a looong time but Ive hesitated to ask as I didnt know how well it would be recieved. You have here the most powerfull engine for a game. You can do ANYTHING you please with it. Who says everything has to be WWII, WWI, or modern day? Hell you could do like Battle Star Galactica or some other space type of things. (Star Trek! Seeing a huge borg cube in the air would be neat! ) You could even do something along the lines of Crimson Skies! Also, is there anyway to make round terrain? (In the shape of planets?) Who says it has to be flat?!?!? Jeeze guys c'mon use your imaginations here! Heck you could even do something like Transformers (Big mech would look neat flying around!)

Just some ideas....

Actually, in some instances we could keep the ground the same and just scale back the models... like tundra.... scale the models down, leave any sdoe buildings out and viola!, HOTH! ;}
Space... I am not sure about... I don't know how the gravity and such is handled in the game.
mech stuff... sure, that would be cool.... Gundam/Macross/Southern Cross/etc... of course the real nasty part would be modeling the transformations. What I have always wanted to see were the Bikes from the Invid invasion from Robotech (Mospeda for all you die hard Anime fans.. ;}) They would be so cool. If you haven't seen them, find something.. either online or in video rental shop.... they kick ass... ;}
Star Wars would be too cool as well. Speeders, Speeder bikes, Ice Speeders.... AT-ATs, AT-STs... Even T-16's (Lukes little racer that is in the back of the garage on Tattoine) Even the big Racers from Episode 1 could be done...... ;}
Time to have fun with this guys... ;}

Mirthain, I was just about to suggest scaling everthing down. That way if/when the planet terrains are done, they wont look so small. The aircraft (UFO?) models would just have to be really small.

Crimson skies!!!!

Great idea!

I was thinking along these lines myself. Most of the planes Crimson skies uses are straight forward rip off's from WW2 oddball designs. I think it was Aladar who posted some screenshots, along with Luft46 diagrams of the planes.

I thought about putting rock 'islands' in the sky for airfields and bases etc. to put an extra dimension into the game. Base would be water, just a plain water terrain. Up in the air would be lots of levels of rock outcrops. I know this can be done......I have mistyped some altitude co-ords when moving lumps of terrain in AC3D and got floating terrain tiles....

We can't stretch the 40 mile limit outwards, but we have unlimited 'up'

The AI will probably be screwed, but the online brigade could have a whole heap of fun!!!!!

the possibilities are endless!!!!

I might even do this if anyone is interested in joining up to do a project. Too much work for one man!!!
