just a few tempting screenshots.....

The outer bits are in place, with only the glass bits to do. All modelled, just forgot to import them! Still, I couldn't resist...that first screenshot.......mmmmmmmm...tasty!

and also

or

and from the other side...

The textures are rough and ready, but serve for now. Note the framerates! still getting 17-18 framerates over land at low altitudes up close. This is respectable considering. You people with 600Mhz processors and three figure Megs of ram plus a decent video card should be fine. Guess what I want for Christmas!

That is looking awsome! Not bad frame rates either. Great job. I can't hardly wait to fly it. I heard that the B-17 shot down 2/3 of the German fighters.

Zool...whats wrong with the framerates! The airfield one is bad....10ish, but there are 3 planes plus all the airfield stuff up close. Old B17 was 17 in the same view. Up in the air, she is still respectable and I doubt there are many people out there with machines much lower spec than mine.

Aladar...2nd level LODs....that was exactly what I WAS going to do!!!!!! Drop the 3rd LOD for the engines ( they have 4) and the 2nd Level LOD where they have 3. I have found that these are in no-mans land as regards detail. Take them out and you don't really miss them.

I will be re-mapping the textures onto the fuse etc. so that the original textures for B17's can be used. It's just a question of spinning the whole model 90' on AC3D and re-mapping.

Just one little problem now.....the wings look chunky.....

p.s.

Next shots should have the INSIDE to show off too!

Blimey! ( substituting for less polites expletive )

just read the B17ii pre-release hype over at Combatsim. Well, I won'y be buying it! The minimum spec for the game is more than I've got! And we all know how well a game runs on a minimum spec machine!!!!!!!!!!

I feel much better about my framerates now!

Hey tailgunner...I shall be releasing some of those models to you today! They look perty good =) I hope it doesn't hurt fps, I don't think it will since they will have high switchIns.

If they do, then we may have to cut polys on the crew. I would settle for the old bodies with the heads you modelled if we have to. The old heads were too inhuman! When I have the new fuse decked out inside with all it's bits, I'll have a base framerate and will release the model to a few select testers to see what FR's they get. Then we add the people and repeat the process. Once we have a good balance, we will be sorted!

Tailgunner, would you like me to kill the current models then? I can do that I guess and clear the drawing board again. I told you they were gonna be imaculent looking models. I understand about the FPS so I guess I can "can" the models then and start all over.

Not yet FJ. No point in trashing good work unless it really can't be used!

This was why I wanted you to model the people in 3 parts. That way, we can mix and match to find a happy medium.

Your original bodies may well be a little poly heavy on the arms, but these are areas which only testing will show up. Finish them up, and texture them and then we can start with putting in the pieces. There is no rush at the moment, since I have some other texture issues I want to resolve....see my other thread! There is also some interior tweaking that needs to be done. Squaring off the ammo boxes and adding some straps to their texture, tidying up the tailgunner area, and finishing the modelling of the cockpit area so it fits the new model.

I have now got a framerate testing volunteer with a high end machine, so I should have some cleare ideas of the limits on polys soon.

Your pilot/co-pilot was great! In fact the only thing that I could suggest was to model the flatter centre section so it looked like the headphones were on the hat. The the head will be absolutely perfect. It has to be too! That is the bit that really will make or berak the crewmen. You can hide blockyness in the bodies under dark leather jacket textures, but the face always catches the eye!

As soon as you have the gunner done, mail it over to me!

p.s. Can you send head, body and legs as seperate models. I haven't really had a chance to sort max out, and have had trouble pulling the max format out into something AC3D will read. Could you send them as 3DS?

Otherwise, export them as .OBJ and plug them into an OPS file and send them as an SM. That would be best for quick testing!

Your efforts are appreciated!!!!!!!

every cake needs a little icing, and for the B17, this will really be that!

Okay good, I was getting ready to start trippin You know it wasn't easy at all, I basically had to learn character modelling and from what I hear that's like the hardest area of modelling. Hehe seems easy to me now, I am just getting tired of lookin at aircrew models...Sometimes I'll just fire up a mesh of the b-17 and go ahhhh how easy that looks to me now. Okay I will send a whole model, then bits and pieces all as .3ds files, no problem man!

Can't wait!

You can see the interior shots in the other thread, and how it looks. I am not at all happy with the textures, and will have to have another go at it. With a bit of luck, no-one will notice the dull texture once people are on board!

The crucial models will be the pilot / co-pilot and the waist gunners.

The others can be low detail stock SDOE level people. There is no way you can get close enough for them to matter. The waist gunners are another matter altogether! If you man one gun, the other gunner is right behind you. Turn round, and he is right there! Mr SDOE Square Head jusn't doesn't look good enough! Likewise the co-pilot.

If I need to cut framerates, the other crew positions will go first!

Anyway, been pricing up a 700Mhz processor and new motherboard! Bye bye framerate problems!!!!

p.s. If you think a B17 looks easy...how about taking on a little sideline project? The B17 is coming together, but the Lancaster looks crap! She could use a new model......I was going to do it, but there is no way I will have the time. Soon as the crew are sorted, how about it?

Raser.....Celeron 333 plus 98 Meg RAM and an ancient Voodoo2 card.

You try getting good framerates with that setup!

Also, the screenshots are just straight off the game, with no cleaning up. I would rather spend the time working on the model than on the screenshots!!!!!

Besides, I have a job and a family and only a limited amount of money to spend on this stuff! So if anyone would like to donate £500 I could get my kit up to spec!!!!
