The following is from an article by someone who has flown the PBY (though not under combat conditions...)To say you fly it is a bit of a misnomer, it is more like you herd it. The Catalina will truly go where ever it pleases and for no apparent reason. It is like following a puppy in a forest of fire hydrants, you don't know where it is headed next, but it is always moving. The PBY has no flaps. Speaking to Pete Ettinger, her previous owner, I had asked, "how do you slow it down?" His response, "why would you want to?" Finally with 1400 square feet of wing and the slightest amount of excess airspeed it will float, and float, and float. The airplane behaves more like a glider than anything else. The above quotes were printed without permission, so to see the whole article go to the link below.... http://www.petroblend.com/dougr/pby.htm My apologies to Doug Rozendaal for not getting his written permission.... (But I did give credit and point to the actual article...) That being said, it sounds like my current FM (except mine is just a touch too slow...). ------------------ Snickers =FC= IP: Logged |

The PDF doc I sent you has the top speed of the pby-6a as 150 knots and 25 minutes to get to 10,000 feet (!) ouchIP: Logged |

Yup this thing flew like a kite alright. Low and slow, or high and slow. Perfect for a spotter plane or a torpedo plane! Its almost too slow for my torpedo but I think it can manage being released at 170-175 mph. (Max speed was 175 mph right? That SHOULD be 150 knots) Hats off to you Snickers! We will have the best looking PBY any sim has seen! IP: Logged |

I downloaded this user made addon for CFS2. It doesn't ahve the flight model you guys describe, but I'm not surprised. I also expect the one you guys make for SDOE to look better. Am I being optomistic? PR=FC=

Private Roger.....did you check out the shots Snickers posted? Er...ours does look a little better than that! That CFS2 model looks like a convert from the old CFS one, with a new skin. The skin is lovely.... Model is very blocky, lacking the delicate curves a PBY should have. Oh that tail is way basic too! And the engines...bet they don't have removable cowls with fully modelled engine and working cooling flaps.... he, he , he I'm only a little biased, you understand, since my contribution to team PBY was the 3D model.... WTYeah, I am quite sure that the PBY that "Team PBY" release's will be far superior to the "user add-on" which is pictured above. The gear in the one above is pretty poor, when you fire the guns the rounds and muzzle flash come from an area about 2 feet in front of the wing, and the 2D cockpit is from some other plane. Oh, and it can't land on there water any more than yours can. It sinks like a stone, then explodes. Tail I got it as part of a mission from this site http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/~ianboys/cfs2mis.htm That site has several different CFS2 missions on it. It is fun to fly escort for it. PR=FC=

Oh yes...the landing gear!I don't know if it took longer for me to model it neatly or for Snickers to make it move the right way! I still haven't made up mt mind if I will buy CFS2. I'm waiting for IL2! IP: Logged |

Snickers, did you ever fix the gear sinking problem? If not and you are stumped, send her my way. I'll get that gear to behave! IP: Logged |

I don't know who's that is, but I have seen better. (There have been a number of PBYs made for the various versions of MSFS.) Since the gunfire appears along the wing this has to have been made for MSFS not CFS (no wing guns on the PBY). The engines are too far forward, the sweep of the tail is wrong, the tail boom is too long (this seems to be a common problem, though the ones with longer tails *look* better.....) AND, if this is a PBY-5A (like the tail says) you should be able to see the gear even when it is retracted....I know, I know people in glass houses and such... (and my walls are going up quickly...) But I think that TeamPBY has some surprises in store for a lot of people... BTW - The published top end speeds invariably are higher than what the plane could do straight and level (though I will still try for the published numbers...). And yes, our FM does tend to feel like a glider if you get it going fast enough. I need to try and slow down some reaction times if I can... (after Beta1). PR - I dont know about CFS but in MSFS, turn off crashes and then you can land on water (and find the the COG on water is different than the COG on land -though both are the same in the air - so then you go nose down and cant take off....) ------------------ Snickers =FC= IP: Logged |

Snickers, with your PBY, can you see the gear when they are retracted? I dont know what model yours is.IP: Logged |

Models PBY-5 and earlier had no gear. They landed on water, taxied into the lagoon, wheels were fastened to the wing and it was towed up the ramp (if you see a PBY with 2 wheels on an axle it is model 5 or before). PBY-5A and after had retactable gear. You could see the main gear on these models, no attempt was ever made to hide it. The model I just sent you reflects this (although the wheel could be pulled in just a touch further....). Nose wheel did retract and doors closed....------------------ Snickers =FC= IP: Logged |
