Well, yesterday, I took some Spits for a spin vs. some Bf.110's. One of them pounded me a bit, so my engine started spluttering, and in the end I had to ditch. I did it just for fun, after trying to glide back. I *knew* I was going to blow up anyway, but no, sir. No blowing up here. No! I extended my flaps, slowed to around 110 mph, and touched down as soft as a feather. Then my Spit glided along, and after it stopped, it slowly started sinking!
That's weird. I've never encountered that before.

I've occasionally experienced the same, but not travelling that fast! More like doing a swan dive off the end of a carrier, and then sinking slowly.

Interesting observation though, maybe the PBY crew could benefit from this?

Come to think of it, you can do it in the driveable tanks too. I really didn't think about it before, did you leave before you sank all the way? I think that if you sink all the way you then blow up. It must have to do with damage the water does while you are skidding across it.

water does damage as you skid across it?...... why not just put an invisiable plate under the aircraft that can't be damaged. then you could land on water... but you would still sink shortly after

The alpha PBY could taxi all the way across the big lake in the Rhineland terrain. Yes, you take damage from hitting water this is why after you sink, you explode). Worse than this, damage is not limited to the outside of the aircraft but goes through the hull. So it would kill the bomberdier and then pilot even though the hull was still in tact.

oh yes....team PBY has been there!

If you ever want to know what happens next, try dropping in the drink when your plane is indestructable....

You fall out the bottom of the world and sometimes crash the game!
