http://www.msnbc.com/news/432208.asp#BODY Given the experiences some have had around here with HDs getting wiped and precious files lost, and given the email interconnectivity of the community, I think this is worth a read. Werner ------------------ Visit Abbeville Field Today! IP: Logged |

Beware!! I just installed this so-called fix and it royally screwed up my system. IE wouldn't open and browsing my Hard Drive was about as fast as on my archaic 8086 ten feet to my right. Obviously this virus is serious stuff, but in this case the cure might be worse than the disease. Viva Microsoft! Not! Werner IP: Logged |

I use Outlook Express and have forever. What better options are there, and are they easy to setup?Thinking it's time for a change, today! btw, I don't want Eudora as it's a massive resource hog (from what I've read). What would you guys recommend? [This message has been edited by Pete Hawk (edited 10-20-2000).] IP: Logged |

I use netscape's mail service. I've never had any problems with it, and its very intuitive.IP: Logged |

If i read the stuff right, Outlook and outlookexpress 5.01 are the only ones to be effected. newer versions should have a problem. I have outlook express 5.5012 so technicly i should be ok. IP: Logged |

Of course everyone blames MS for this, but it comes from people trying to hurt MS apps. It is also because of the people who jump in to computing screaming it is too complicated and to make things more automatic, and simpler to use. Then they go around dropping CC numbers like candy, keeping the numbers accessible because they wanted it simpler. Please. And BTW, it doesn't matter what you use, there are hacks for it. We just hear about MS apps getting hit more often becuase it is MS and they happen to have the largeset group of users. Also don't forget that the group that found this were trying to break it. It wasn't something that just happened by accident. Yet another reason to keep your "Sensitive" information offline and somewhere safer.... hell, phone is better now since almost noone is hacking phone lines anymore, they are concentrating on the online world. ;} Mirthain=FC=IP: Logged |

I use AOL. I know, I know... it has HAD a bad rep. because of all the buisy signals... but these past two years I havent gotten any buisy signals. (Maybe because I live in a BIG area tho...) Just an occasional boot off. Its easy to use but 20+ U.S. dollars a month for unlimited access.IP: Logged |

Question: How do you get rid of explorer if it has been rendered "un-uninstallable"? Do you just delete the directory and edit the registry? What app do you need to edit the registry?Another Question: Is anybody running IE5.5 on their system? My 4.0 and Outlook of same have been rendered unusable because of a problem with an old isp disk I tried to reinstall IE4.0 from, so this is just about my last-best chance at fixing this nightmare. Thanks, Werner P.S. To those who are waiting on me to update their files to AF, or get back to them re: nations stuff (Eyes) - I won't be able to do any of that until I'm back at 100%. I'm really sorry! IP: Logged |

I need to ask a favour - could somebody please run a search on their HD for a file called "url.dll" and email it to me? (keepinga@cadvision.com), along with the directory path where it was found? Thanks in advance.Werner IP: Logged |

I'm using IE 5.5 through Windows 98 and also Outlook Express. No troubles whatsoever. Prior to upgrading though I was constantly getting hit with the Kak Worm virus. She's all all sweet now.. Karaya 2=FC= IP: Logged |

Spanky here... I don't know where people pick up viruses, I know freinds who do less then me on the net and still get them, yet I think I have gotten one in the last 4 years, wacky. Right now I actually just use an online mail service, hotmail or yahoo mail.

I'm in the same boat as Spanky, but my seatbelt tried to kill me. I think I'll get an airbag instead (AV software).Werner ------------------ Visit Abbeville Field Today! IP: Logged |

In order to do this, you have to do two things, 1. Edit the registry and delete the uninstall file reference, and several other registry entries2. Delete the internet folder file 3. Also, to be on the safe side, if you pick up a virus, delete ALL of the files in the cookie folder- just in case As editing the registry is not fun- I have a recommendation- go by Systemsuite 2000 form ontrack. Between the registry tools, virus checker and other tools you can fix almost anything. Last- DON'T USE MS MAIL PROGRAMS!! The love bug, melissa and other viruses were visual basic scripts that could ONLY launch themselves from Outlook or Outlook Express- My suggestion- Get StarOffice (free download)as it has the best free e-mail program (part of the whole suite) I've seen. Otherwise, use Netscape, Eudora Lite, or Penguin mail. ALl of these are free and can be obtained from download.com quote: Originally posted by Werner Molders: Question: How do you get rid of explorer if it has been rendered "un-uninstallable"? Spanky here... Yep I didn't say don't use an antivirus package. I just said it seems to be a wacky problem. I think its more in offices where disks can get handed around alot. I don't run my virus scanner all the time though. Just let it check the whole drive everyonce in a while. IP: Logged |
