The format of the planepack is currently as follows:

3 parfiles

1. with nonstandard components for online play - hangar missions, training etc. This file represents about 10 mb for downloading and if someone is bandwidth compromised perhaps they don't need to grab it right away. This will likely be packed separately to allow this flexibility.

2. holding all graphic elements textures and sounds. This represents 30 mb in separate files, 20 mb in the parfile and 15 mb after zipping for download. These aren't specifically checked for compatibility but are kind of required for the plane to work. It is likely many of these files will not change frequently and therefore updates to this file will be less frequent.

3. all sm, airfoil, loadouts files required for online compatibility, this will also include cockpit files. The parfile is about 30 mb uncompressed and 8 mb for download.

The intent here is to allow updates to the planes without having to download all the components over and over again. If a creator updates the sm file then that is all that needs to be updated and downloaded. In cases where texture files are updated then they will be included in a separate parfile ( or the sm parfile) on a temporary basis until a major update is developed. So in the future more frequent plane pack updates will be on the order of 8 to 12 mb, or less if a fourth parfile is released instead of sending out a full revision of the third file.

Spin, most of us have a lot of user created sounds which take up a lot of drive space. Is there some way we could get a list of the planepack parfile sounds including their source and original wav file date, so we can match the parfile sounds with our sound file wavs? We may be able to delete a lot of files that way and save a lot of disk space.

Jerry,

Damn good question, I am considering including a list of files included in the read me - however there are currently about 1500 files to worry about. However, I have constructed the pack without sound addons - the files are based solely on what plane developers have released. These aren't required for online compatibility and are generally more a personal choice.

However, as part of the install package we will need to include a file check to ensure duplicate files are either backed up or removed. In my review of my sdoe install I found a ton of files that were constantly overwriting planepack files. I will see if we can have an option to exclude sound files from this sequence.

Nat,

So far things have gone very well - all problems I've encountered with mission files have been due to syntax problems in the source information (not due to a bug in bigmunger - although this might be considered a bug). I'll be posting in the tech section on this but basically if a training section folder and mission contents does not exactly match the case (upper or lower case) structure of the plane's sm file it won't give the mission briefing. I think I've got them all working now.
