What is the possibility of building civilian planes for SDOE? I'm so impressed with the game engine I think it would provide an equal if not better experience for civilian flight than X-Plane, FS2000, Fly!, etc. -- I'm continually disappointed with these simulators.

It's something I would like to spend some time on, but I've never built a plane before so I don't know how long it would take to learn.

Just a note: I have 3D Studio MAX R3, but it is such a hassle I would like to try out AC3D. trueSpace 4 is the best, but I'm not sure if it will work with SDOE models (???). I have a nice 747 .3ds model that would be a good starter plane.

Direct me to any tutorials on starting out on building planes. Thanks!

I think it is a great idea, the OpenPlane engine would indeed make the best general aviation FM/DM available! I want to model an ultralight

There is no way to implement navigation and ILS, etc. yet. You can create a very nice detailed 3d cockpit though.

I recommend using AC3D, but that is just me. Many here us 3dsmax with great success.

Here are my OpenPlane documents:

I've been wanting to build two planes for the longest time, the Cessna 140 since I have some great plans, and the Curtiss JN4d "Jenny". Chances are the Jenny will come first, since my grandpa flew them.

Well, if we want to talk about civ planes here, I would love to see a Skymaster by Cessna in here... and with our newer planes and helicopters would round out a nice Viet Nam scenario as they were the O-2 observation planes used until very recently by the USAF. So a nice loadout would allow for unarmed as well as rocket and gun pods.. ;}

Pang,

If you're ever in the Portland area there is a nice Jenny in the Pearson Air Museum across the river in Vancouver, WA. At least there was a year or so ago. You may want to call ahead in case it was a loaner.

Sounds good!

Now what about getting the models for these many planes? Should they be built from scratch or barrowed from other flight sims (is that possible?) or simply we would use existing 3D models of these planes?

I have a beautiful .3ds model of a 747, for instance.

I agree no ILS, no communications simulation, but what it lacks is made up by the game engine.

P.S. Can I build planes with trueSpace 4.0 instead of 3D studio? It uses the .obj extension.

Spanky here...

I can't see any reason why you should't use Truespace.

Good luck, I would love to fly a 747 in SDOE.

I would need a full damage model though. LOL

I want to take that sucker out of the sky lol and crash it on landing.

HEHE

Maybe its just me

The Americans with the Piper Cub and the Germans with the Fleisher Storch. Now what would you do if your 109 just happens to find a lone Cub flying around...

Remember: Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

DC3 with paras!! Yeah!!

Large transport planes would be cool too - that in combination with some modern Cav units could make for some interesting tactical maneuvers!
